The Pardon

I started reading this book and really thought I was going to enjoy it and had finally found a new (to me) series. And then — he killed the dog. I love animals and cannot understand why an author would do that. I don’t think it was really necessary for the story. It just was a “shock value”. Lost me as a reader.

It was an interesting story, entertaining and it was a good, fast read. But I found the ending to be a bit annoying. Everything is wrapped up so nicely, everyone lives so happily and sweetly ever after, the sugar was dripping off the pages. Not real life, I can tell you.

The action moved quickly, which helped distract the reader from the occasionally trite writing. The characterization of the subjects of the book was rather flat; they didn’t seem like real people. I lost the train of thought when it became obvious that there were two killers instead of one; that fact was not hinted at enough earlier on in the book. On the other hand, the story moved right along and was fine for casual reading, not particularly challenging, but fun.

I recently read the last book on this series and loved it. Now I have read the first book to get the background of the characters and read the entire series. This first book was not as good as the latest version but that’s ok. It was still exciting!

I am a Grippando fan, and decided to go back and read this series in order. i’m glad I did. This is definitely a page-turner. . . The development of Jack’s character as a son, lawyer, fiance, and suspect is intricately woven into a brilliantly constructed story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the first to the last page.
