Forsaken (Mountain King Saga #1)

I’m going to say this first:

On the whole, this book delivered on what was promised. Dark, characters that have grit and are fleshed out well. A world we know and enjoy. Overall I’d rank it 4/5 stars. The 2/5 I did rank it is purely from my PERSONAL standpoint.

PERSONALLY I hated the MC. For someone as “smart”, and “clever” as he’s supposed to be he is a dumb man-child that I just couldn’t get behind at all. And because of that it tainted the book for me.

I even went back to re-read it a second time and it didn’t change my feelings about him. And I feel bad saying this because I love the author and enjoyed his works before but I might not be able to continue reading this series.

But there you have it. The book was great, I just hate the MC

Terry Mack wil always be awesome for being the original inro into this world but a wizard in Celestine is much more my speed… Granted a little unhinged. All we get at the beginning of the book is how he is smart and totally a wizard and not a warrior or rogue, but in practice he ends up being allergic to thinking and probably living.

Hopefully we will get to see him apply thought in the next book a wizard with no finesse is a warrior and we have Terry Mack for that and a much better cast with him. MC pretty much became an idiot post broodmother as far using his abilities and had nothing to do with his mental stability.

Log out randomly when he can wake up chained… not likely, just saying he’s paranoid and fearful but never paranoid and fearful in his favor…

Books will be as good as the others as soon as support characters are fleshed out a bit, not invested in any of them at the moment. The MC also needs to decide on a personality or persona as well. Evil Genius or Fearful Moron flopping between the two had me pulling for Mor by the end… great first half frustrating second half. Book two will decide.

I really tried to enjoy this book, I really did. Unfortunately, I dont like the main character and the variety of ladies. None were as interesting as Terrys girls. And the odd rpg elements just seemed odd considering this supposedly takes place in the same universe.

The game format felt off and makes me question Celestine as a real place or not in this world. The fights are okay enough but it is NOT as dark or darker than Cebs main series. Only thing I loved were the cameos and thats it. Doubt I would buy more of this spin-off.

I love a great dark tale. This adventure in the extremely vast world of Celestine is just such a tale. From the opening sequence all the way through to the set up for the next novel; this is epic dark fantasy. I love the MC and his growth, or descent, into madness is fascinating to read. This is great and Cebelius might have topped the original Celestine story arc. Can’t wait for more!!!

The first part of the book you’ll get mad at the mc for being in denial, but get over it at about the 33% mark. The rest of the book is actually a lot of fun. Then the book ends on a cliffhanger the likes of which relates to Mufasa staring Scar in the eyes as he said “Long live the king”, only to be pushed off the cliff in Lion King. The worst part?

This books deserves 5 stars, as much as it makes me mad. Cebelius, you are a cruel author, and I am fully aware of the fact that you did this on purpose, and I truly respect that. Wonderful job on this book.
