So I love anything by this author. I love the intrigue mixed with the low-key family and friends times. I love the characterization that makes me feel like the good guys (and gals) are people I want to know and befriend. I want to take Andy and Laurie to dinner. I want to meet Willie and Marcus — and try to make Marcus laugh. And then I have to remind myself that all of these people, the whole team, are fiction. I’m a bit sad at that, but then I realize that they’re all inside of David Rosenfelt. I could take him to dinner! I could find out if he’s as humorous in person. For, you see, the thing that sets David’s books apart from the rest of the great authors is the laugh-out-loud humor that comes out at totally unexpected times. The humor…and the dogs…will just keep me coming back. I want to be laughing along with David’s characters when I’m ninety. If you ever quit writing, David, I’m going to have to reread your books, and to date my memory’s pretty darn good. Thanks for making my life more interesting and much more enjoyable!

Hounded audiobook in series Carpenter Series

My first question when I was well in to the book was, where are the DOGS!? Yes, I was fooled by the title & the cover but was not that pleased with the story regardless. There are many characters that are hard to keep up with but it could be worse as the author often uses context when mentioning a previous character again so I don’t have to look them up.

The story was a bit challenging to understand, like the jury, I felt left out of the gist of the connections until the last. This book was not a great pleasure to read, I found myself skipping around just to get to the end, to see what the gem was when revealed. I wasn’t that thrilled, more like, meh. This might be a good read for some but if I find myself skipping things.. not a great book.

Audiobook Hounded by David Rosenfelt

I struggled with whether to give this four or five stars. I enjoy the Andy Carpenter books and don’t want to discourage anyone from reading them. That said, I kept getting the feeling as I read this book that I had already read this plot. I don’t remember if it was another book by this author or by a different author. If you’re a Rosenfelt fan, you’ll still want to read this book. I think “Hounded” is good, just not Rosenfelt’s best. If you haven’t read any of the other Andy Carpenter books, you’ll like this book and will want to read the others. As another reviewer said, it seems a contradiction, but these murder mysteries are great light reading. David Rosenfelt’s books keep me interested all the way through the book. It seems so many books I’ve read lately don’t really keep me interested in the beginning, but Andy and friends immediately pull you in. I certainly will keep reading anything David Rosenfelt writes. The very mild disappointment I had in this book is not enough to discourage me. “Hounded” is certainly worth reading.

Audio Hounded narrated by Grover Gardner

Again David Rosenfelt delivers another very readable and enjoyable Andy Carpenter mystery.
This time Andy is asked to defend his friend Lieutenant Pete Stanton of the Paterson, N.J. police force. He is accused of killing Danny Diaz as well as drug dealing. Usually there is a dog involved besides Andy’s beloved Tara and this time it’s Sebastian,
the basset hound who also brings along Diaz’s son, 8-year-old Ricky, both of whom come to live temporarily with Andy and Laurie.
As with any Carpenter mystery, there are twists and turns that leave the reader wondering how these incidences and characters fit into the murder. But all will be revealed. The usual cast is there—Laurie, Andy’s love; Willie, Marcus, Sam, Hike and Edna. And though you might think you know who the murderer is based on what you’ve read—-you’ll be surprised.
Some say that the Andy Carpenter plots are somewhat repetitive. But really who cares when one can enjoy Carpenter’s sarcastic wit, clever rejoinders and court room antics. I mean, if you go to your local ice cream shop and order your favorite—a hot fudge sundae with sprinkles, you know what you’re getting, but is it any less enjoyable?
I will tell one surprise–but for a reason. Andy marries Laurie. I tell you this only because I’m hoping married bliss does not signal the end of Andy Carpenter mysteries. Don’t do this to us, Mr. Rosenfelt!

Maybe I’ve been reading too many of these types of novels for too long. I can’t help it; I’m a certified mystery buff. Then again, maybe these authors are becoming victims of their own success in my mind. They cannot possibly outdo themselves with every successive effort. In any case, I liked “Hounded” just fine, which troubles me. Like the golden retrievers who feature in Rosenfelt’s novels, I sit eagerly by the door, panting, tail thumping on the hardwood, waiting for the next installment. I want to run out to the mailbox, grip the next book between my teeth, and gallop indoors to devour it. This was neither a gourmet dinner out of a can nor a bone that got caught in my throat. It was just…okay. Main character Andy Carpenter is enlisted to help his close friend, Paterson detective Pete Stanton (another featured character in all of these novels thus far), beat a murder charge. Stanton had motive, means and opportunity. But I’ve read enough of these things to know before I cracked the binding that Carpenter would get him acquitted. In circumstances such as these, I expect there to be some element of suspense, like “maybe he DID do it.” John Lescroart recently wrote a Dismas Hardy mystery that was like this, and I couldn’t put it down. But in this book, the issue was never really in doubt. Plus–Rosenfelt could do with toning down the banter a bit. We know his characters can crack the quip whip. It begins to ring somewhat hollow after awhile. This old dog expects the bones that these writers occasionally toss us to be a little–only a little, but enough–meatier.
