Always a wild ride with Andy McDermott. Death, destruction, mayhem … you know, the usual. Sad loss of an innocent (no spoilers) but I’m hopeful that the story picks up and things even out (only half-way through it so far). Grammatically awkward to read at times (not exactly Shrunk & White conforming) but the play is the thing and Andy keeps the story line moving – or rather, rushing along violently. Can’t wait to see what multi-thousand year old artifact, building, site Nina and Eddie will destroy next!

Kingdom of Darkness audiobook in series Nina Wilde And Eddie Chase
I am done with these two..Eddie’s belittling comments are demeaning and take away from any real writing, they are almost “high school” in an effort to be funny, I increasingly was turned off from reading any further. I deleted the book from my kindle.. the story is not good enough to tolerate the attempt at humor..

Kingdom of Darkness audiobook by Andy McDermott
This is an OK story, unless you are in to the Demolition Derby scene. Then, it is a great story. Nina and Eddie are on a quest for the “Spring of Immortality”, reportedly part of Alexander the Great’s legacy. In their searcy, they leave a trail of death and destruction, primarily multiple car crashes, across four continents. Throw in a group of aging but revitalized Nazis from WWII, and you do have non-stop action. However, the last couple of books in this series have gotten away from the find/rescue, document, and preserve theme so dear to an archaeologist’s heart and gone to a find and destroy premise. Add some personal problems for the protagonists and series seems to be slipping slowly downhill.

Kingdom of Darkness audio narrated by Simon Mattacks
The book started off with promise but then descended into Young Adult cringe worthy gibberish. A car chase that was boring rubbish finally ended my adventure into La La land at page 52. I notice this is part of a series, I could have guessed with all the veiled references to prior happenings. Trust me when I say, “I will never read another book by Andy McDermott”.

As a fictional character, Nina Wilde is memorable. Although struggling with a serious illness, she is driven by a dedication and knowledge of archeology while being compassionate about those with whom she works. However, it is Eddie Chase, Nina’s husband and partner, who pulled me into the story, made me laugh with his witty one-liners, and entertained with his Indiana Jones likeness. I absolutely loved the train sequence with the Nazis! This is a great story.
