Kristy and the Worst Kid Ever is a great, touching, and sad story about a foster kid named Lou. Lou is welcomed into the Papadakais family and instantly starts causing trouble. Like any foster kid, Lou comes from a troubled past that you learn later is the cause of her behavior. It’s touching, inspirational, and sad. Great book, definitely worth 5 stars!

As a homeschool parent, I was always on the lookout for the next book or book series that would really get one of my kids reading. Of course, interests vary, so book choices need to be tailored to each individual child.

When my older daughter discovered The Baby-Sitters Club books, I knew I was onto something. I must have bought 100 of these books, all of which she devoured. She also reread many of them. At that age, anything that gets them reading and keeps them reading is a win. From that perspective, I can highly recommend these books.

My daughter loved them so much that she was never willing to part with them. She now teaches fourth grade and took the books to her classroom!

One of the characters has Type I Diabetes. While I applaud inclusion of any character with a disability in childrens books, mistakes were made. We know this because my younger daughter has Type I Diabetes. But even that proved educational because we discussed the diabetes situations as they arose.

Audiobook Kristy and the Worst Kid Ever by Ann M. Martin

The babysitters in this book show that they should not be left in charge of kids, and the Papadakises are terrible parents and foster parents. When Lou, a child who has recently lost her father and her mother’s run off, is put in the Papadakis’ home, they immediately leave her in the care of the BSC.

Despite being told Lou doesn’t like to be touched, Kristy, Mary Anne, and Dawn repeatedly physically yank Lou around and get outright angry with her for acting like a child. Lou acts like a real child. She doesn’t always want to do what the other kids want to do, she’s not a carbon copy, and she’s scared. Is she understood? No. She’s treated worse than Kristy treats the autistic child, Susan. The babysitters in this book don’t even try. They just openly declare her to be the WORST kid EVER, and claim they understand what she’s going through even though Kristy has a stable home and Dawn’s parents are both alive and Mary Anne had her father alive. None of them have been in Lou’s shoes, yet those three tell Lou they understand. It’s no surprise that Lou gets mad. But of course that makes those three idiots think that Lou’s just a terrible kid since she doesn’t shut up and say they’re right, they totally understand her. If it gives you any idea how bad they are, KAREN, the resident hell-child, is possibly the kindest person to Lou. If it gives you any more of an idea how incredibly awful those three babysitters are, after the club talks about how even foster kids, who are always difficult, always deserve love and care, Kristy actually says, and this is a direct quote, “Later on, I would remember what we had said, and wonder if we had been wrong.” She actually wonders if Lou deserves love and care.

This book makes me loathe some of the babysitters, and get really mad at Ann for thinking that this book shows appropriate wants to deal with foster kids. A lot of the BSC books are so bad they’re funny. This one’s just so bad that it shouldn’t have been reissued, and Ann should apologize to foster kids for presenting normal foster child behavior as making them terrible kids.
