I usually love Marian Keyes, I find her tone of writing very funny and down to earth, and her characters are always relatable and human. However, this book didn\’t contain a single likeable person. The protagonist, Lucy, is whiny, obnoxious and very faux-modest, and the dialogue is often either stilted or irritating ( take for example the constant need to address a person by name at the beginning or end of EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE.) The narrator definitely didn\’t help, as she had none of the charm usually possessed by Marian Keyes\’ narrators, and managed to make everyone sound even more entitled and awful. I really have trouble believing this is written by the same author as Last Chance Saloon and Sushi for Beginners, as this book is just riddled with horrible characters, tedious dialogue and a plot that is shallow at best. Absolutely no surprises along the way either, it is blatantly obvious who Lucy will end up with from the moment he\’s introduced, and every other plot point is predictable and cloying. Don\’t waste your time on this one, I felt like ripping my hair out on several occasions.

At first I agreed with some of the other reviewers that the characters seemed unlikable, but as I continued to listen, I found that the book was really a lovely story about a young woman finding herself after years of letting people mistreat her (and mistreating herself). It made me think about that process in my own life and I unexpectedly teared up when the book ended. I highly recommend this bookjust be patient with Lucy while she figures things out!

Audiobook Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married by Marian Keyes

As a longtime, die-hard fan of Marian Keyes, listening to her books as opposed to reading is always a bit anxiety-inducing at first. Although others have criticized the narrator, I thought she did an excellent job, with one exception. She is very talented with accents, producing flawless London (Cockney-ish), Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Yorkshire and even German! The only place she falls down is with Daniel. The character of Daniel, whilst being gentlemanly and kind, is also meant to be cool, saavy, good looking with a good job… and she makes him sound like a bumbling, goofy, uneducated half-wit – not Daniel at all – especially if you have read the book prior to listening. However, overall a very good performance.

Audio Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married narrated by Amy McAllister

I enjoyed the story, as I do all of Marian Keyes books. I didnt like the narrators mens voices, they all sounded annoyingly dumb.

Amy McAllisters ability to perform accents so well and to switch between them so breezily is amazing! Story is good but imagine it wouldnt read as well as you can listen to it.
