The eponymous character, Maigret, makes all 51 of the Maigret novels I’ve read enjoyable reads. Maigret’s most impressive character trait, the compulsion to “understand, but judge not,” gifted him by Simenon, a character trait to which the novelist himself aspires,is pleasantly illustrated in the novels: “I only want to understand.” Some of Simenon’s figurative language is memorable. The novel has literary qualities, like the novels of Ruth Rendell, that lift it above many mystery novels. The way Maigret accesses his own life experiences rings true; Maigret reaches back to his own childhood to understand the children of the novel. Maigret seems like a real person one could meet. One finds oneself thinking: I wish I could be like Maigret. In conclusion, I’d recommend all of the Maigret novels I’ve read.

Maigret Goes to School audiobook in series Inspector Maigret
I am a confessed Simenon junkie and this book was a fine example of a Maigret. Concise pictures of the landscape and amazing studies of people

Audiobook Maigret Goes to School by Georges Simenon
This book was written a long time ago in a foreign country, but it has a universal appeal through the ages. No matter when these books were written, you can’t go wrong with a Maigret book.

Audio Maigret Goes to School narrated by Gareth Armstrong
I love Georges Simenon’s Maigret. I thank the publisher who has gone back to release some of his very early works.
Maigret Goes to School was the best I have read of his early works but have many more to go.

Chief Inspector Maigret travels to the Charente Maritime area of France at the request of a suspected murderer–going with visions of the region’s oysters and white wine in his head. The tiny village where the murder of the much-despised local ogress took place, closes ranks against Maigret and the main suspect (an outsider AND the local tax collector) and offers no cooperation in the procedural that the Inspector undertakes. On top of the frosty welcome, there are no oysters available!! Maigret digs in and as always follows a logical path toward the crime’s resolution.
The village mysteries in the Maigret series are often among the most engrossing because of their detailed look at small town life and culture in La France Profonde. “”…goes to School” is no exception as it delivers an intelligent plot and conclusion and interesting, multi-demensional characters without a false note throughout. It’s a short book, but highly entertaining. Recommended.
