I wondered, but I struggle with names? Would I have trouble placing characters? My mind was put at rest right away. This story drew me in immediately. the writing is exquisite, the images unique and perfect. They ultimately saw themselves as a Lost generation, Hameed and his brother. The story of the family is a tragic one, but so full of poetry, beauty, love and life. I love this book.

I loved Sofer’s Septembers of Shiraz. I have been intrigued with Iran since my childhood, as rich Persian arts and culture drew me in. The Iranian Revolution made sense to me, initially, but then seemed to become yet another restrictive and cruel state. Man of My Time is a dark novel but one that made me wish all the more that I had been able to visit the land in earlier years. Sofer is well versed in story-telling that arouses your senses with the details of Iranian life, history, and art. This story of a man who started as a revolutionary but became one of the state’s interogators drew me in. I found myself reading it slowly, savoring the richness of the detail while trying to understand his journey, as he tried to understand it. It moved me to think more deeply of the immigrant’s experience in the U.S. when family is left behind, even when of their own choosing. I love books that leave me pondering the human condition. This will go on my list of favorites.

I did not like anything about this book, which I could not even finish. I found it a sad, depressing and confusing story to follow — was the main character part of the Shah’s government or what followed? In my opinion, it does not hold a candle to the author’s excellent first book “The Septembers of Shiraz” …

There was no redeeming quality to this story , in my opinion. I hated the protagonist I loved Sofers book The September’s of Shiraz, this book – not so much.

A discontent child during the Iranian revolution grows into a tormented man who works as an interrogator for the Republic of Iran. Sofer weaves her story with exquisite delicacy and precision. The history is the backdrop for this story of one man’s anguish, but I think those who already know Iran’s modern history will enjoy this book the most.
