I bought this book expecting an easy fluffy read, but the book turned out to have a lot more depth than that. Serious themes like the death of parents, legal guardianship, law suits over custody and money etc feature in the book, and the love arc of the two main characters fits into those events. There was enough humor present, and I loved the little sister.
Just a little note: in civil cases the parties are called plaintiff and defendant, only in criminal cases the parties are called prosecutor and defendant. Something lawyers, which both main characters are in the book, should definitely know…

Meet Cute audiobook Series Teddy Hamilton

I loved this book. The meet cute was one of my favorites and something that would totally happen to me. I love how they worked through their past and built a future.

Audiobook Meet Cute by Helena Hunting

I believe I learned about this book from a Goodreads romance list for the summer, and I had a good long wait for it from my library. This is another case of book covers being a lot more cutesy than the content within. The book did earn 4 stars but it couldn’t go up to 5 for me.

I liked the full chapter prologue of the meet cute referenced in the title. I thought our heroine Kailyn was delightfully fangirly and it was nice to show that adorable flaw. I also appreciated that both of our leads are lawyers. I thought was really interesting to get more into that profession in a romantic comedy comedy and show characters having real jobs in a big city. OK, yes, I am a huge fan of legal shows. I also love that this is a dual POV, it’s always good to get both perspectives. Because you can’t get that in real life, so I want it in my romances.

Now on to why we didn’t get 5 stars. I thought the dialogue was a bit stilted. I know they’re lawyers but we never actually see them in court so there’s no need to be quite so formal and long-winded. Kailyn info-dumped a LOT. As well, each best friend got very little page time and still had a big influence on our resolution. Also, how was Beverly trying to recruit Daxton for years AND he lives near to Kailyn AND they attend alumni events…but never crossed paths in 5 years?

I did really like the new “father” and family dynamic scenes. Also really liked that there is a big age gap and the younger sister Emme was so young and I was believable that Daxton would have to be stuck with her for a long time. I also like that the author poked fun at silly names within the romance genre.

Side note: Can that someone tell me what TV show the author was spoofing with “It’s My Life? Was it Degrassi or Saved By the Bell?

Another reason I mentioned that the cover does not match the content is that this got into some darker stuff. Lawyers deal with things like trusts, and adoption and they both have their own issues to overcome. I know all romance novels deal with some issues but these are not very light. Death of parents with very little time passing is pretty heavy.

Lastly, the sexy scenes were great and I liked the slow build-up to their relationship as well as Daxton’s fixation on Kailyn’s sexy tights. The author made sure to show (and tell, a bit much) how these two connected emotionally and professionally.

Audio Meet Cute narrated by Holly Warren

I’m conflicted about how to rate this book, because even if this book ticks all my favourite tropes in one story there are good things and not-so-good things, and even if I devoured the book in one sitting I feel that it felt a little bit short on the good things side. But let me start by saying that this is not a rom-com.

This is the story of Kailyn, who meets her teen years’ actor crush, Daxton Hughes, on her first day in law school in a cute and embarrassing way. They manage to develop something like a friendship during their Uni years, only for him to betray that friendship in the end. They lose contact after that, and years later they meet again when Dax and his family need help from her expertise in trust funds law.

What was supposed to be a one-time meeting, turns into Kailyn being legally involved in the fight for the custody of Emme, Dax’s underage sister, and how Kailyn and Dax can fit their attraction to each other into that legal mess.
