While I liked many aspects of this book (the character conflicts and group conflicts all felt very real to me), the finale all seemed extremely strange to me. Without delving into spoilers, the force that was creating the external conflict was not anything like what I expected, and it was not one I was especially pleased to see enter the Schooled in Magic universe either (at least in part). While the core concept was sound, and indeed was foreshadowed in some ways in previous books, I felt that it left me feeling deeply unsatisfied and wondering where the author intends to take the series from here after introducing this new source of conflict. With so many conflict points seemingly unresolved in Schooled in Magic already, I can’t say that I was thrilled by this.
Nevertheless, most of the book was good, and the writing was solid. Like the immediate predecessor, it showed improvement over several previous entries where Emily seemed, at her core, emotionally stunted and unable to grasp certain parts of the world around her. The worldbuilding was filled from previous books in to a degree that not much more was needed, which could have resulted in an even faster pacing (but which was mitigated by increasing time spent with characters in tense but non-action sequences). Overall, a very good book that could have been great but for an odd change of direction at the end.
Seeing where the author has now taken us, I wonder where we will go from here. I would also like to say that, while I was not a fan of the direction itself, it was not poorly written for such a direction. I just do not like the trope as an overall part of fiction, was not expecting it here, and would have preferred if it was not present in the universe.

Mirror Image audiobook Series Schooled in Magic
I’ve enjoyed every book in this series so far. The growth and maturing of the protagonist Emily has been fairly steady, with only a handful of setbacks over the course of the series. She and her ex manage work together with only a few wistful “what-might-have-been” thoughts. The creating of the first university in their world is a huge undertaking. The political landscape has the university’s leadership in such a dilemma that I’m looking forward to seeing how that side of the plot unfolds.
The mystery of the mirrors in this story kept me riveted. The twists and hints were masterfully woven into the fabric of the story. Loved it! It raised quite a few new questions about the lore of their world; I’m not sure if the author will revisit those areas or let them be.
This installment was missing a few of the side characters that readers have grown used to seeing. I kept expecting them to show up and was at the end before I realized they’d only been mentioned in passing. Lady Barb, Void, Imaiqua, Marcus/Melissa, etc… Luckily, it seems like Void will be a focus of the next book as Emily starts her apprenticeship. He’s been such a mysterious, intriguing character, and I can’t wait to learn more about him.
I definitely recommend starting at the beginning of the series if you haven’t read it. Very enjoyable and entertaining.
Please note: The content and language are a bit mature, but not overly so, and always tasteful. The first few books are bit more innocent, as Emily is younger. The entire series is still well within the realm of YA. A few “f-bombs”, so it depends on how sensitive your family is to strong language. I’m waiting until my tweens are a bit older before letting them read the series, but that is a personal parenting decision.

Audiobook Mirror Image by Christopher G. Nuttall
Great series but each book follows pretty much the same storyline that all the other books follow. The main character has grown but also hasn’t grown and makes many of the same mistakes that she keeps making.
Spoilers Below…
Seeing the evil version of Emily is kinda cool but that plotline wasn’t the real plot of the story. The real plot of the story is about Manavores that have been trapped and we get to learn what they were which is really cool but the “win” in this seems to just happen as she battles herself…But the necromancer version of her is still mostly sane sounding and literally does what the main character should have done to wipe out the necromancers with someone like Void to teleport her around. Still keeps the wonder of the world going and is really cool overall and the main character has definitely grown from the earlier books, but she never seems to draw from her experience to actually complete tasks always having to reinvent the wheel to get things done.

I like the way the writer progresses through different worlds and times that allow the characters to develop and grown. Sometimes in ways that the reader at least finds surprising. I have read and have many of his books and not just this series.
This is in the realm of pure fantasy, and is way into the series. While you don’t have to have read the earlier books, it certainly won’t hurt
