From the first book, I have been hooked on this series, and wondering where it was going. For those who don’t know the series, do start with Schooled in Magic. That said, Emily is an earthly teenager who has been summoned into an alternate universe and has been training to be a combat sorceress, something her manner of arrival set her up for. She started at Whitehall but has now allowed herself to be “kidnapped” to find out what’s going on at a rival school. This isn’t a case of college rivalry: The two schools are training the magicians tasked with defending the vestiges of a crumbled empire from death magicians. Their students are all that stands between civilization and death.

As I think on it, I believe this is my favorite book from the series. Others have worried over Emily’s lack of growth and reliance on coincidence or accident. And there is some mystification that she is bested in magic by fellow students and teachers yet has killed two necromancers (death magicians). This is explained by her revulsion at dueling, which we first saw in book four. She does not like to see magic used to do harm, even humiliation, unless it is necessary. And she has more power than control. It is therefore natural that while she would be able to wield her power to kill, if she must, she would not have her heart nor her head in it when it feels like just an exercise. Sometimes the sharp operators fall apart when things go bad, and sometimes bumblers only get it together when it’s crunch time. It feels natural to me.

On a second point, I was impressed with the way Emily navigated her relationship with the headmaster at the new school. In a world where oaths are truly binding, she was able to see and learn a lot, much of it deeply secret, while sidestepping the oaths that would normally have bound her ability to use or share what she had learned. And her last minute judgment about who could lead the Mountaintop school forward without giving one of the factions the upper hand was marvelous. A rip-roaring read.

The School of Hard Knocks audiobook Series Schooled in Magic

Having read this series from 1st book in the series to this the 4th, I can tell you that I’ve enjoyed them so much, I’ve actually read one after the other (not something I usually do). The story is about a young teenage girl (16) who is magically abducted from Earth by an evil Magician into another realm where magic is the norm, who thinks she’s the Child of Destiny, and wants to sacrifice her to take her magic for himself. There are humans in this world who do not have magic, and live an extremely primitive live, Even the rich and powerful, do not have the day to day amenities that we take for the norm on earth. The world is similar to Earth in the middle ages. She ends up having massive magic herself, but has to learn how to use it, She is saved from the demon magician by another powerful man who send her to a magic school to learn how to use her magic she uses her knowledge from Earth,to initiate things which do not exist in her new world, which give her money and power, and in the process manages to kill the demon who abducted her, and another who tried to capture her for himself, thereby becoming equally feared and held up as a hero by the world, which makes her even more of a target for politicians and magicians equally. Its a book which is equally good for a teenager to read, or a mature person like myself. I would recommend that you find Book 1 in the series if your interested in this. Not hard reading, but interesting, and well written. Can’t wait for Book 5 to come out. Hope this helps if your interested in books on Magic / monsters and magical creatures.

Audiobook The School of Hard Knocks by Christopher G. Nuttall

The books in the Schooled in Magic series continues to be very enjoyable reading, at least for me. In this instalment Emily makes another trip outside of Whitehall but unlike the other such trips she is actually continuing her schooling, as an undercover student to Mountaintop, another school in the Allied Lands.

In one sense this book gives a bit of an alternate view of magic schooling in the Allied Lands in the sense that the way Mountaintop goes about it is rather different from Whitehall. especially perhaps in terms of the social and authoritarian structures and ways at the two schools.

It was quite fun to read about Emily’s new experiences and how she struggled, adapted and made mistakes. As usual the book is full of interesting characters not to mention a mystery or two. As usual Emily’s curiosity, stubbornness and ignorance about a fair amount of things causes her to wander into quite some adventure and make a few mistakes along the way.

I have to say that I was somewhat split at the end since none of the bad guys were really that bad after all. There was a reason they where doing what they were doing and they seemed to rather firmly believe that it was for the best of the Allied Lands. Several of the characters that one would have expected to be some really bad individuals actually came across as rather reasonable a lot of the time. There are really no simple, stereotypic, bad guys (or god guys) in this book.

Audio The School of Hard Knocks narrated by Tavia Gilbert

I have enjoyed the series until this point , though it had some new ideas thrown in for the most part I kept wondering how many times would the necromancers bane re-run the same stuff she had thought in the last four books, from the do not look at me even though I am meant to be the heroine , the I know how to treat people and then do not follow up on the moral up/downsides, it had lost its freshness and though that made me decide to drop this series or jump a book or two with the hope of seeing the story advance

Emily is introduced to a new school and anew more dangerous magic. Schemes within schemes are used to try to change her. They don’t but she learns darker magic as her power increases. She also has a great sense of right and wrong and this goodness helps her keep on the right side. She does see more aspect of inequality manipulated for power . She comes into the world of binding oaths and its misuse for what she sees is evil. A good book and still leaves you with many questions and mysteries. Now for the next.
