Murder in the Mansion

I am so pleased that the missing volumes in the Hillary Green series are being released. It was so frustrating to have four of the middle novels unavailable. This murder case is gripping and demonstrates Greens mastery of procedure, plus an ounch of intuition. The final ending was expected since faithful readers of the last books in the series knew what was coming either in this novel or the next, but it was still a shock. I cant wait for the next novel to be released.

DI HILLARY GREENE and her team will investigate the death of Mrs Matilda Jones. Mattie was stabbed to death in her home. She was going through a divorce and was having an affair. Her attitude has made her a few enemies. Meanwhile, a sniper is setting up outside police stations and shooting cops…

The main storyline was woven with several subplots and all of them were interesting. I followed the investigation as I read and tried to figure out who murdered Mattie. I also hoped they would find the sniper who was shooting the cops. The person who was guilty of Mattie’s murder was a surprise to me. I did not suspect that character once he/she was introduced. The end of the book (one of the subplots) was a complete shocker and totally unexpected!

The Hillary Greene books by Faith Martin are a series of police procedural crime mysteries set in contemporary England. This book is the eighth in a series of 17 and shows DI Greene at her best in tracking down a seemingly invisible killer. She is renowned within police circles for her interview and interrogation skills which she uses to devastating effect. I found it more satisfactory to read this series in chronological order butt they read just as well as stand alones. Later in the series she tackles cold cases, but that is another story.

I really love the Hillary Greene novels and this one was no exception. The killer is seldom the one that you suspect and the side plots keep you involved. Just when you think you know who did it you find out you don’t. The characters are easy to engage with. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Brilliant mystery full of twists and a cliff hanger at the end. I Have been binge reading these mysteries since the pandemic and they have kept my mind occupied as I follow DI Greene through her career. Highly recommend the series to any whodunit buffs.
