I enjoyed this book, but did enjoy it a whole lot more during the first half than the second half. I found that I was a little disappointed with the ending and didnt enjoy the way it all came together so easily in the end for our characters. It was a bit predictable for me, although still a decent and happy ending, which I liked.

SPOILER-FREE SUMMARY
Everyone expected the kings daughter would inherit the throne. No one expected me. It shouldnt be possible. Im Nameless, a class of citizens so disrespected, we dont even get names. Dozens of us have been going missing for months and no one seems to care. But theres no denying the tattoo emblazoned on my arm. I am to be queen. In a palace where the corridors are more dangerous than the streets, though, how could I possibly rule? And what will become of the Nameless if I dont?

Things I really liked about this book: our main character Coin, she was spunky and sarcastic and just downright awesome; the way the trope of found family is presented in this book, it was wholesome and sweet and I was rooting for our family of characters; the magic system, which I thought was very unique and cool and touches on the concept of royals naming an heir, but with magic involved. I thought the characters were multi-dimensional and believable as well.

Things I didnt like: the world building seemed just a little underdeveloped for there to be no sequel in the works. I felt like I just needed more answers. I also didnt like how easily things came together in the end for the protagonist. But that was it.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed most of this book and would read a sequel if one was written. I will also definitely keep up with the authors future works cause I did really enjoy this book!

There’s a new star in the world.

The author has created a magical adventure for the reader to immerse themselves in. YA fantasy, this is a story about a girl who could be anyone. Anyone who has never risen above poverty watching those who have look down, if they notice her at all, on her and others of her kind. Survival is dependent on con jobs, pickpocketing and finding a place to rest that won’t get you killed as you sleep.

Imagine that same person, at seventeen years of age, winning a lottery of sorts. In this case she just won being crowned as the queen in all the land.

Sounds like a dream come true until she finds out that anyone can kill her in the next few weeks with the result they would then become the king or queen. She’s basically won a death sentence. Readers are taken on a journey as the “Nameless Queen,” aka Coin, has to pull off the biggest con job of her life.

Expect mystery/suspense, action/adventure, and a few twists and turns with the final outcome always in doubt. No cliffhanger ending, no to be continues (although it could if the author chooses), this is a complete tale.

Excellent tale….

Audiobook Nameless Queen by Rebecca McLaughlin

This was a fantasy novel with a pretty standard premise about classism, royalty, and semi economic issues. I went into ‘The Nameless Queen’ with no expectations what so ever. I liked the prose and the writing flowed easily. Some of the characters and the dialogue were authentic and kept my attention.

The plot played out in a typical fashion. You don’t have to be a seasoned fantasy reader to spot the familiar tropes. For the most part, ‘The Nameless Queen’ is a fast-paced narrative. I enjoyed how the worldbuilding did not overshadow the characters nor bog down the pacing. The focus was one hundred percent on the characters and their interactions.

The first 50% of the novel is great, the last 50% plays out predictably.

Audio Nameless Queen narrated by Emma Galvin

I would give 4.5 stars if I could!!! First off, it is definitely a YA book, simple theme, maybe not as tense and dramatic as I usually like an ending to be – but I’m pretty sure this is her first book, which is incredible! I’ve read seasoned authors that couldn’t pull a story together this well, let alone develop the characters as well as Miss Becky here did. Beyond that, no jarring grammatical or spelling errors! I can’t even begin to describe how excited I was about that. This book is definitely worth reading!

From the very first chapter you know that this book has some very likeable characters and is going to be action packed. Nameless Queen is a very fun read and hard to put down. Some bits are predictable but other bits are a total surprise.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants an enjoyable YA adventure with several strong female characters!
