John Perry is seen doing a couple of things on his 75th birthday. First, he paid a visit to the grave of his wife, and second, he joined the armed forces.
The good news here is that mankind has finally found its way into interstellar space. On the other hand, the bad news is that the planet worthy of living in is quite scarce. The races of the aliens are looking to fight humans for those planets is a common thing. Therefore, we fight to defend our planet Earth and to have our claim on the real estate of the planet. Far away from the planet Earth, there is a full-fledged war going on for many decades. It was quite bloody, brutal, and unyielding at the same time.
Earth is known to be a backwater itself. The majority of the resources of humanity are right under the control of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody was clear that when the retirement age comes then you could join Colonial Defense Force. They don’t want any young people to be part of their group.
The book earned a nominee for Hugo Award for the best novel category in 2006. The interstellar arena of John Scalzi is grippingly and coherently delineated.
