An enjoyable book, but consistent with Daniel Silva’s formula for the preceding five or six Gabriel Allon books. Allon meets girl. Allon recruits girl. Girl performs mission but is discovered and captured by bad guys. Allon risks himself to save girl and is seriously injured. Allon kills the bad guys and rescues girl – or doesn’t (sometimes yes, sometimes she dies).
There was a loose end I didn’t understand. At one point Mikail and four Sayeret Matkal commandos set off on a 40-mile hike in the dessert to rescue Allon. They never get there, but it doesn’t seem anything bad happened to them either. I almost think Silva forgot about them.

Portrait of a Spy audiobook in series Gabriel Allon
Suicide bombers strike Paris & Copenhagen killing dozens & injuring many more. Evidence points to a new terror network that is spreading its tentacles rapidly across Europe, the UK and the US.
Gabriel Allon, leading a retired life in Cornwall, is visiting London. Walking towards Covent Garden with Chiara when he spots a suicide bomber. Gabriel is all set to take a kill shot when he is tackled and taken down – by MI6 agents!!
This starts another Gabriel Allon thriller where, enlisted by the CIA to track down the terror network and its mastermind, he comes very close to dying.
While the action flags in places, Gabriel aficionados will not be disappointed.

Audiobook Portrait of a Spy by Daniel Silva
I feel so lucky Daniel Silva is in my life–not only is he one of the best current story tellers but I learn so much about the history of the Middle East, the Jewish people, the Arabs, their conflict, terrorism, Israel–and he also explains current events as well–his characters are consistent throughout all his books and Gabriel Allon keeps growing to meet all the challenges he is faced with–Portrait of a Spy is another winner—

Audio Portrait of a Spy narrated by George Guidall
The Gabriel Allon series is one of the best. Right now is my favorite. I being reading if in chronological order which I think is the best way. The only think that sometimes the writer emulates the Greek tragedies. The Greek uses one of their gods to take the hero out of peril. The writer sometimes put Allon in such difficult situations that there is no way out …. but then one the bad guys take an unexpected action the saves Allon life. I am not fond of this. Otherwise the books all page turner.

David Silva is a new author to me, but after a friend’s recommendation I started with Portrait of a Spy and was not disappointed. As current as today, this book deals with terrorists and those who are out to get them. The sophisticated computer surveillance may be exaggerated, but it certainly makes for a good story. The writing is excellent, the story holds up, and the characters, especially the main Israeli operative and the woman he has recruited to pull a sting, are well developed and believable. Gabriel Allon appears in a series of books–this is number 11. I fully intend to go back to number one and read until I’m up to date. My only complaint, and it’s more my fault than the authors, is trying to keep up with a wide range of characters makes it difficult to remember who everybody is and what role they play in this complicated plot. Be prepared to visit such exotic locales as Dubai and a Christy’s Rare Art auction. This book probably falls in the thriller category and there is no lack of cloak and dagger intrigue and suspense.
