This is book 5 out of 15 in the Gabriel Allon series author Daniel Silva has mastered into such an international success story. Silva’s books are riveting and will hook you until the conclusion. This installment takes place in Italy, Israel and moves in and out of Europe and the Med. His story will grip you, and many of the details are taken from recent headlines in worldwide news outlets. This book is titled after what Allon’s mentor calls him, regarding him as a great avenging angel (like his name) and a defender of the Israeli state. I screwed up and read many of the novels out of order, but enjoyed this one very much. I recommend it highly.

Prince of Fire audiobook in series Gabriel Allon
Having never read Daniel Silva, I’ll admit to some initial trepidation: a middle-aged Israeli art restorer cast as the hero in a spy thriller? My worries could not have been more off the mark – Silva’s Gabriel Allon is a remarkable character, combining the pragmatism and stealth of LeCarre’s George Smiley with the bravado of Clancy’s Jack Ryan.
Following a devastating terrorist attack in Rome, Allon is draw out of semi-retirement to track down the perpetrator, possibly the apocryphal son and grandson of Palestinian terrorists with whom both Allon and mentor Ari Shamron have a history. “Prince of Fire” is very loosely based on the history of Ali Hassan Salameh, Black Septembrist and architect of the slaughter at the Munich Olympics. What follows is a well-crafted and thoroughly researched tale of Israeli espionage, as well as a riveting, if brief, history of the Palestinian conflict. While the story centers on Allon’s pursuit of the elusive Khaled al-Khalifa, the true villain in this story is Yasir Arafat, rightfully cast as the master terrorist with the blood of untold thousands of Jews and Palestinians on his hands. This is a dark tale with few winners and many losers, a story of pyrrhic victory of some justice but limited revenge.
While LeCarre’s once fine writing has faded to the ramblings an apologist wallowing in his misguided views of the moral relativism of democracy, communism, and fascism, writers like Daniel Silva and Alan Furst continue to write spy stories with the passion that comes only with the clarity found in recognition of the existence of good and true evil. While fiction, this is as compelling a lesson in contemporary Middle east history as it is entertaining; an intelligent and highly recommended read.

Audiobook Prince of Fire by Daniel Silva
In his fifth novel featuring the art restorer and Israeli sometime assassin, Gabriel Allon, author Daniel Silva delivers another gripping chapter in the difficult life of his central character. The title comes from a comment that was made by Allon’s mentor, Ari Shamron when Allon returned as a young man from his first assassination on behalf of Israel. Allon’s black hair had gone gray at the temples as a result of a traumatic reaction to the event, which caused Shamron to call them “smudges of ash on the prince of fire.”
In this book, following an explosion at the Israeli embassy in Rome it is discovered that the Palestinians have uncovered Allon’s identity, his bloddy past and have marked him for elimination. Moving swiftly on this news Allon is extracted from Venice and returned to Israel.
An analysis of a series of attacks that have been carried out prior to Rome reveals that a master terrorist is at work in planning and carrying them out and Allon is detailed to determine the man’s identity and to track him down and eliminate him.

Audio Prince of Fire narrated by George Guidall
Unfortunately I started reading Daniel Silva in 1919 and found his writing and books amazing and extremely well written. I progressed year by year finding the Gabriel Allen books very addictive and as one review said the only problem with his books was waiting for the next one and I am in full agreement. However the Prince of Fire I did not find as good. It was like having a history lesson with a plot interweaved. I still read all of it but for the first time ever with his books missed the odd sentence; normally I have to read and savour every word.

I only discovered Daniel Silva this year and am working my way through the ‘back list’. PRINCE OF FIRE is a humdinger of a thriller, pitching Mossad super-agent Gabriel Allon against another team of Palestinians plotting terror attacks in Europe. Silva gives team-leader Khaled and his female accomplice personal as well as nationalist motives for wanting revenge on Israel and the nations that support Israel. Yasser Arafat makes a brief but chilling appearance; he was, in Silva’s book, an implacable enemy of the peace process.
PRINCE OF FIRE zaps from location to location at a cracking pace. The climax comes three-quarters of the way through: a horrific attack in Paris. Between this climax and its inevitable corollary we get an extended glimpse of Gabriel’s personal tragedy as his wife Leah begins to emerge from the fugue state brought on by the explosion that took their daughter’s life years earlier. The price of terror is one that both sides continue to pay. Brilliant stuff, Mr Silva.
