I used to be such a fan of this series and Anita. What I loved was her kickass attitude and all the paranormal aspects. Today I gave up trying to read this book and am very sorry to say I wont be buying any more. According to my kindle app Im 39% through the book. Havent seen hide nor hair of a plot. Just ENDLESS descriptions and discussions of all her relationships. 39% of the book of her and Rafael and others discussing sex and nothing much else. Im just tired of it. I dont object to her sexual preferences, but the books have become all about that and almost nothing about a plot or anything outside of her more than ridiculous number of sexual partners. Somebody give me a heads up if she ever gets back to her job. Ill be happy to try again.

Rafael audiobook in series Anita Blake

The depth of questions raised by discovery of the damaged- but precarious- rat culture deserved better. Frankly, the metaphysics and explanations of same, and the reiteration of the tenets of polyamory grow irritating. After 28 publications in this series alone, its pretty clear to readers. Also clear is the writers preoccupation with her personal life and the chronicling thereof does a disservice to the epic characters and sheer badassery of Anita Blake.

Rafael audiobook by Laurell K. Hamilton

I have been a fan of LKH for many years, but each book in this series has gotten worse and worse. It’s like listening to someone with severe anxiety over explain every thought, action, interaction and so on. There is such an extreme level of PC language for what may seem to some like taboo subjects or lifestyles (I liked the risqu parts in LKH writing), now it just feels over explained. It no longer feels like fantasy. I will write more soon. Highly disappointed. I am glad others like this book. I’m retiring my Anita Blake series. May try another Mery Gentry if it comes out, but I imagine the highly over therapized approach will be there as well

Rafael audio narrated by Kimberly Alexis

You finally gave Raf his own book. However the only time you went into real detail was when you were discussing Antique inner boo circle. You spent time on details about the soon to be husbands. You made the Male lead weak while at the same time dropping hints that he was strong. You rushed the entire book. You should have been learning as much as you could about this detailed and enduring wer group. Instead its was just confusing and Antia was more into girl on girl sex than she was really focused on her new roll in the Rodero. You need to do better next time.

Short, quick read. Felt rushed in parts and dragged on in others. Wish LKH would find a balance. She tends to drag out the descriptions and history that someone who is reading the 28th book in a series already knows, but then rushes through the things that current and actually happening. For instance, on one page they’re talking to Narcissus about making Rafael her rat to call and then bam the next page it’s happened off “screen.”
In her effort to make Anita seem that she’s grown and learned as the books have gone on, Anita has also become someone who is just walked over and gives into everyone else’s demands in regards to the relationships around her.
If JC is the vamp king now, there has to be something he can do about the Asher/Kane situation because it’s beyond ridiculous now.
My last thing, I get that she is trying to make this poly thing a thing and expand Anita’s orientation but it comes off as trying WAY too hard when she spends half the novel trying to really get the reader to believe Anita is now into women.

    1 thought on “Rafael”

    1. How has the writer of this series gone from exciting story lines and characters to over explaining everything the readers have already heard 20 plus times already. Each book lately is almost like a cut and paste from previous books. Ridiculous over descriptions that just go on and on and have no merit to the story and by the time they are finished it’s hard to remember what was actually happening. Such a great character to be writing about after plenty of build up and the story is then rushed and barely touches on him nevermind the whole fact it’s supposed to be about him becoming one of her animals to call and then it ends up happening in a way that leaves you going back to reread thinking you missed a few pages. What has happened to the writer of this series? I have no problem with poly relationships but this reads like someone who has a set of rules in their head about how it should be and wants to make sure you get bashed over the head with those rules repeatedly. Is the writer possibly in a new poly relationship and working out their understanding and own therapy through her books cause I assure you this is not what I know of poly relationships. The characters don’t even seem like themselves anymore. Not just that they have grown as people but that their characters have completely changed. I loved this series once and I wish the writer would get back to writing great stories and less turning everything into long drawn out stuff repeated a dozen or more times before. No need to reintroduce characters after 28 books, we already have heard it 20 plus times before. Don’t even get me started on all the new terms for the different shapeshifters. Fair enough put them in the story but is it really necessary to repeatedly write ‘lycanthropes, sorry, Therianthrope’ (or whatever her pc term was) whilst talking about them? Once sure but I literally lost count. Again with the cut and paste. So disappointed that we didn’t get to the depth of this character. I am scared to see who gets glossed over next. Come on Laurell, get back to the actual storyline.
