Stines writing sucks you in as you follow Wil and her gang in a winter that has lasted two years and devastated the country, forcing her to pack and move from the only home shes known, searching for her loved ones. Picked it up to read a chapter and couldnt put it down until I was halfway through, after midnight. A riveting read to the end.

Scenes are artfully crafted to place you right beside Wyl in her old truck, showing you the fights and the fires, letting you feel the frozen mud under her nails. The imagery here is anything but desolate, the warmth among the main characters and the pure heat of the lead, Wyl, take the reader on a road trip through hell with no question that we’ll be okay. If you’re the kind of person who pushes on through seeming hopelessness and endless want, you’ll find a hero in the main character in this book. She knows who she is and isn’t sorry for any of it. Excellent writing. Highly recommended.

Strong female lead who felt real. Sometimes she felt older than she was supposed to be but she was smart and didn’t make stupid decisions. I didn’t roll my eyes once! Well written, I very much enjoyed it

Alison Stine is a writer of tremendous gifts. She renders her characters meticulously, showing their humanity in the face of desperate times.

It’s taken me a long time to post this review because I’d really like to share my reading experience in a way that does this novel justicec. Truth is, I can’t. So I will just say that if the synopsis intrigues you, get the book. The story is compelling, the telling engaging, and the world-building immersive yet subtle enough to draw you all the way in. Stine deserves all the accolades coming her way (congrats on winning the 2021 Philip K. Dick Award!!) and is an author to follow into the future. After reading Road Out of Winter, I bought her previous title, Supervision, and loved it too. Patiently waiting for the next one…
