I appreciated the narrative and was inclined to assign a 5-star rating. However, there seemed to be an excess of introspection from the main character, and the storyline could have benefited from some streamlining. It meandered into various tangents at times.

Alright, I’ll confess to being a fan of cozy mysteries, and my expectations are fairly modest. However, Single Malt Murder managed to get under my skin. Right from the beginning, I found myself more irritated than I had anticipated. The interactions involving Abigail, the protagonist, and practically every other character left me somewhat unimpressed. The treatment she received from the townspeople near the distillery’s location didn’t sit well with me either. Some instances of anger directed at her seemed unjustified and confusing, only to have their reasons revealed later in the story—albeit not in a way that truly made me empathize with the resentment.

The central mystery failed to captivate my interest. It seemed like a significant chunk of the narrative was dedicated to elucidating everything about whisky, followed by Abigail’s internal struggles over what to do with the inherited distillery. Eventually, the investigation into the mastermind behind the unfolding events took center stage. My critique might give the impression that I found little redeeming value in this book, but it’s important to note that many other readers did thoroughly enjoy it. Regrettably, I wasn’t among them. Allow me to point out a few aspects that I did find appealing.

I appreciated Abigail’s cautious approach toward trusting the various characters in the story—a refreshing perspective. Furthermore, thanks to this book, I now have a newfound understanding that if I ever decide to indulge in whiskey, single malt is the way to go. The portrayal of the setting was a commendable effort, painting a picturesque and inviting backdrop. Liam, Abigail’s dog, was a delightful addition to the story, adding a touch of cuteness and warmth. So, while there were certain elements I did enjoy about Single Malt Murder, unfortunately, they weren’t sufficient to motivate me to continue with the series.

Audiobook Single Malt Murder by Melinda Mullet

The backdrop was indeed charming, yet the narrative felt lacking in depth, and the execution left room for improvement. Another review rightly advised the author to draw from their own expertise in their writing, and I concur with that sentiment.

Abigail Logan, affectionately known as Abi among her friends, boasts an impressive track record as an award-winning photojournalist. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she inherits a single-malt distillery in Scotland from her cherished Uncle Ben. This inheritance thrusts her into the heart of a traditionally male-dominated industry. Almost immediately after receiving the news from her uncle’s attorney, Abi finds herself targeted by anonymous threats. It becomes evident that a concerted effort is underway to intimidate her into relinquishing the business. Yet, Abi is resolute and refuses to back down.

Upon her arrival in Scotland, Abi uncovers a series of deliberate acts aimed at sabotaging the distillery. Mysterious equipment malfunctions plague the operation, and matters escalate dramatically when a lifeless body is discovered within one of the tanks. Teaming up with her companion Peter, Abi embarks on a personal investigation to uncover the identity of the individual so desperate to acquire the business that they would resort to murder. The pool of potential suspects expands, given the numerous offers Abi has received to purchase the distillery.

As an emerging author, I found the book to be skillfully composed, and the characters exude an appealing charm. The reading experience was thoroughly enjoyable, leaving me eagerly anticipating the forthcoming installment in this series. I extend my gratitude to the publisher and Netgalley.com for affording me the opportunity to delve into this story in exchange for my candid review.

The debut novel was a source of enjoyment for me. The characters were vividly portrayed, and I’m eagerly anticipating Melinda’s upcoming literary work. Through the narrative, I gained substantial insights into the intricacies of crafting single malts and the intense rivalry that simmers among proprietors in this realm.
