This marks Philip Quaintrell’s debut book, and as an English professor, I must express my admiration for its exceptional craftsmanship. The characters burst with life, the details are enthralling, and the vividly depicted world is a treat for the imagination. I wholeheartedly endorse not only this book but also the entire series.
On another note, I embarked on a journey to explore five different authors’ works, hoping to discover a captivating series. Without a doubt, this book emerged as the clear victor. While three of the books left me disheartened after over 100 pages, one was passable, but Philip Quaintrell’s work soared high above all the others, distinguishing itself brilliantly.

Audiobook Rise of the Ranger by Philip C. Quaintrell
This tale unfolds through several third-person limited points of view, constituting a PG-15 story featuring violence and occasional non-graphic sexual content. Due to these elements, I find it unsuitable for preteens and early teenagers. It’s an eclectic fusion of fantasy genres, drawing inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien, Harry Potter, and dragon Rider themes, to some extent. The story, though entertaining, feels like a foundation-laying, non-standalone first book, clearly setting the stage for a series.
Now, onto the balanced perspective: I’ve encountered numerous three-star books that I’d happily reread multiple times due to their sheer brilliance. Despite minor distractions or perceived plot holes, I’m still uncertain where this series stands on that scale. However, I can envision revisiting the story once or twice, depending on its future quality and how it develops. I’m thankful I accessed it through Kindle Unlimited rather than purchasing it.
