Witches don’t exist in the modern era in which Diana Bishop lives and she also does not believe in their existence fully. Diana just likes one thing in her life i.e book reading in her favorite library. Through book reading, she gathers information about any stuff in which she gets interested.
As she reads more, an interest develops in her to locate some ancient books in the library through which she would be able to get information about ancient things. One thing Deborah Harkness writes about in the later section of the novel is that Diana also is a descendent of witches. Because of her connection with the family of witches she always gets a creepy feeling to listen about witches. During her search in the library one day she brings down from a shelf an ancient book about witches.

The girl opens the book with the thought that the book would be an informative one about witches but it unleashes the terror of the underworld on earth. Diana is more surprised to observe that she has the power to control this terror and mold it according to her desires. Matthew Clairmont the vampire geneticist also appears to provide Diana his services thus a new reign begins with this opening of the book.
Jennifer Ikeda in a little more speed than was needed in the novel that’s why some of the words needed repetition, the expression however was fine. Shadow of Night and The Book of Life are next in the line for those who loved this first book of the season of the witch. Witches and magical creatures are seen everywhere after the opening of the ancient book and there is a lesser number of humans found in the novel.
