Initially, I anticipated the usual memoir or another run-of-the-mill book. However, I was taken aback when I discovered it was anything but ordinary. The pages were adorned with valuable life lessons that, if readers were inclined, they could choose to jot down and integrate into their own lives. Surprisingly, I found this aspect highly beneficial and dare I say, somewhat therapeutic. This was far beyond my expectations for a book derived from a mere hit TV show.

This Is Me audiobook

Unbeknownst at first glance, Chrissy Metz, renowned for her portrayal of Kate Pearson in the acclaimed series “This is Us,” and I share a multitude of commonalities: both being the third child in our respective families, enduring the presence of abusive stepfathers, grappling with impoverished backgrounds, contending with body image concerns, pursuing acting careers, venturing into writing, and even coinciding in our interactions with Sterling Brown, the actor behind Randall on “This is Us.” Admittedly, Chrissy’s triumphs as an actress far surpass my own, and unlike me, she has achieved New York Times bestseller status. Additionally, while she shared screen time with Sterling Brown as his sister, my own encounter with him was during my role as an extra on the set of “Insecure” when he appeared as a guest star. Nevertheless, I’ve chosen to spotlight our parallels, which led me to her captivating memoir, “This is Me.”

Within her memoir’s pages, Chrissy provides readers a panoramic insight into her life, beginning with a remarkable invitation to dine with none other than the iconic Oprah Winfrey. Her storytelling prowess left me engrossed and audibly amused as she recounted the bewildering call from Oprah’s assistant – a call she initially believed was an elaborate prank. However, when Oprah herself extended a personal invitation, Chrissy promptly accepted, and her descriptive narrative immersed me in the splendor of Oprah’s enchanting estate in Montecito, California, as if I were present for their conversation. She artfully transitions back to her upbringing in Gainesville, Florida, where she resided alongside her mother, father, and elder siblings.

Chrissy delves into the sensation of estrangement within her familial abode, a result of the age disparity between her and her siblings, compounded by her father’s detached demeanor. She christened her father Mark, an individual marked by infidelity, and eventually, her parents separated. Subsequently, Chrissy, her mother, and siblings returned to Florida, where financial struggles persisted. It wasn’t long before her mother encountered Trigger, a man who would become Chrissy’s tormentor. In response, Chrissy found solace in food and education, eventually becoming involved in the choir, thriving in the realm of music, and embarking on her journey in entertainment as a budding actress and later as an agent. The turning point came with a role in “American Horror Story,” a pivotal step on her path to ultimately securing her role on “This is Us.”

Throughout the memoir, Chrissy imparts invaluable insights she has garnered from navigating her extraordinary life – a life punctuated by sorrow, elation, criticism, uncertainty, astonishment, blessings, and optimism. She imparts lessons she’s acquired through romantic relationships, emphasizing the importance of asserting oneself and uttering a resolute “no” when circumstances demand. Her story struck me as both inspirational and uplifting, demonstrating that even an abused girl who endured poverty in a Gainesville trailer park could actualize her aspirations – a realization that extends to anyone. I can attest to this truth firsthand, being a survivor of abuse who emerged from impoverished circumstances in San Francisco’s projects to manifest my own dreams.

Audiobook This Is Me by Chrissy Metz

This book is truly beautiful. The author’s words resonate deeply with me, reminding me of the many significant lessons life has bestowed upon me. It exudes an immensely positive vibe. Chrissy skillfully imparts the idea that we possess the power to extract wisdom from every experience. We can opt to nurture bitterness or embrace sagacity. In this regard, Ms. Metz chooses the path of wisdom, generously detailing HOW she attains this state – a rarity. Frequently, we’re told the “What” and sometimes the “Why,” but rarely the “How.” Her writing style is engaging, akin to a spirited conversation. I found myself immersed in her words, feeling as if I were sharing wisdom and laughter with a wise, fun-loving friend. However, there was a moment that gave me pause. She writes about her co-star Mandy Moore, describing her as wearing “old age” makeup for her character, often portrayed as a woman in her early 60s. I am currently 61 years old, and this assertion struck a chord.

Although I am well aware that the author intended no harm, I felt a momentary sting to my ego. Nonetheless, Chrissy emanates self-awareness and compassion, qualities I recognize and appreciate. We seem to communicate in similar tongues. When I unintentionally hurt someone, I prefer to be informed so I can rectify my actions. Since I can’t directly reach Chrissy, I’ll express it here: The term “old age” can carry a derogatory connotation and can be as confining as the term “fat girl” in our society. At 61, I feel invigorated and alive, and yes, I am treated differently from when I was Chrissy’s age.

I set the book aside for a while to reflect on this perspective. Time flies, Chrissy, and with each orbit around the sun, we learn, grow, evolve, and improve. Perhaps one day, in a seemingly sudden realization, we’ll ponder, “Am I really 50, 60, or even 70 years old?” Embracing our age is quite cool, even though certain facets of our culture might view “old” as less valuable. There’s an unfortunate association of “worn out” with “old.” As I reflect, I’m uncertain how casually I may have used that phrase when I was 40 or even younger.

Nonetheless, thank you, Chrissy, for your book and for prompting me to confront this sensitive aspect of my perception. I adored your book, relished your anecdotes, imbibed your wisdom, and shared your laughter. Your rendezvous with Oprah is simply fantastic. (And I’m sure Oprah wasn’t perturbed by the “old age” comment, so I’ll take a leaf out of her book and let it go.) Being a person with 61 years on this planet is integral to who I am today. Thank you for candidly and warmly sharing your journey thus far. I wholeheartedly recommend your book to others.

As an ardent admirer of the series “This is Us,” stumbling upon an advertisement for Chrissy Metz’s book, “This is Me,” was an undeniable sign that I had to immerse myself in its pages.

Within its covers, Chrissy vividly chronicles her life journey: a childhood marked by the absence of a father figure, overshadowed by the enigmatic presence of a stepfather who treated her in bewildering ways; her passionate connection to singing; the unceasing battle with her weight; her aspirational pursuit of an acting career; and ultimately, her relocation to Los Angeles, where she found herself working as an agent for actors, sidelining her own acting ambitions. Much of her narrative parallels that of Kate’s, adding a layer of authenticity to her portrayal of the character.

Interwoven amidst these life stories, Chrissy imparts pearls of wisdom, guiding readers towards embracing their true selves, even in the face of societal pressures to conform. These insights emerge solely from her personal experiences, presenting you with a choice to heed or disregard them.

If you share my affinity for “This is Us,” I wholeheartedly recommend immersing yourself in this book. And if well-crafted biographies intrigue you, then this book unquestionably merits your attention.
