In the Author’s Notes of this book, Will Thomas reveals that it took him five years to create this literary masterpiece. His expertise as a book reviewer and speaker on Victorian crime fiction shines brightly within the pages. It serves as an impressive introduction to an exceptional series.

The story revolves around Private Inquiry Agent Cyrus Barker and his new apprentice, Thomas Llewelyn. The title originates from Barker’s newspaper advertisement, seeking a replacement for his previous assistant. The phrase “Some danger involved in performance of duties” turns out to be an understatement, as Llewelyn faces numerous difficulties. Set in Victorian London, this initial adventure delves into a particularly unusual case involving the discovery of a young Jew’s corpse in the heart of a Jewish ghetto. Was it a warning to the influx of Jewish immigrants in London or a personal message? Mr. Thomas utilizes his extensive knowledge of Queen Victoria’s era to transport readers through various corners of the enchanting city, even introducing them to Lord Rothschild, the famed banker.

As a longtime fan of period mysteries, I must say that this book was immensely enjoyable. I became so engrossed in the unfolding events that I forgot to search for the culprit. It was a delightful surprise to witness Mr. Thomas’ skill in concealing the villain from my grasp. The author breathes life into every quirky character surrounding Cyrus Barker, painting vivid descriptions of the sights, sounds, smells, food, squalor, and luxuries of the era. While I initially started this series with another book, “The Limehouse Text,” I realized that the books can be read out of order. However, I strongly recommend beginning with this first installment, as it provides essential background information about Barker and Llewelyn, which was not thoroughly explained in “The Limehouse Text.” It answered the questions I had after reading that book, enhancing my understanding of subsequent installments.

This is not your typical “cozy” mystery; it brims with action, danger, personal perils, and encounters with diverse individuals who would never grace the pages of a “cozy” mystery novel. Cyrus Barker’s worldly experiences as a traveler manifest in the friends, enemies, and allies he encounters. The Chinese community in London plays a prominent role in both books I have read thus far, while this particular installment focuses on the Jewish areas of the city, with an intriguing detour into the Italian section. I advise setting aside ample free time, leaning back, and savoring this book or any other in the series. I have discovered a remarkable author to add to my list of favorites.

Barker, the enigmatic character in this tale, possesses an uncanny talent for self-defense and always emerges at crucial moments to aid his young apprentice. Little is known about Barker, other than his Scottish background, upbringing in China, and his ability to speak Chinese fluently. He also exhibits a deep knowledge of various faiths. While Thomas has shared details about his own life with his employer and mentor, Barker remains silent about his own past. We can only hope that future books will unveil the missing pieces and reveal more about his enigmatic persona. It’s difficult to imagine these two as a team—Barker, tall and imposing, donning his ever-present dark glasses, and Llewelyn, a mere 5ft4, eagerly absorbing all of Barker’s teachings. Yet, it is precisely this contrast that makes their partnership so intriguing and endearing.

The mystery at hand is a puzzle with numerous clues, leaving the killer elusive amidst the myriad of leads pursued by the duo. However, one trail leads Barker to an astonishing discovery that unravels the truth. This is an exceptional mystery brimming with action, with Thomas emerging as a promising secondary protagonist, adding depth to the narrative.
