I feel like this is a must read for anyone is unfamiliar with Pauli Murray. I will admit that I was ignorant of who she was and I am so glad I got the chance to read her biography. I enjoyed this because it was such a personal account of her accomplishments and it was such a pleasure to learn about her life. There are so many quotable passages but I just had to gobble this up that I didn’t even think to highlight anything.

Paulis biography gives insight from a Black woman who was raised in Durham, North Carolina and she helps us understand the south in a more nuanced way that brings a different perspective. You will want to read the book to understand what I mean. I will give one example: Pauli noted in Durham when she was growing up there were areas where black and white people lived next door to each other. We often assume that this kind of thing never happened in the south. Pauli Murrays life was varied from poet, to lawyer, to writer and as a priest. Pauli had challenges along the way as she worked in these various areas. She helped provide a legal strategy for Thurgood Marshall in Brown v. Board of Education that proved to be very effective. Also, Pauli Murray was influential in the thinking of Ruth Bader Ginsburg when it came to womens rights. Although Pauli Murray has been long overlooked, I would encourage you to discover this great woman in her autobiography. It will be time well spent.

Audiobook Song in a Weary Throat by Patricia Bell-Scott – Introduction by Pauli Murray
A thoughtfully written autobiography by one of the leading lights of the 20th century. From law professor at Yale to a priest in the Episcopal Church, Pauli Murray affected generations of Americans. Her essay on civil rights was the basis for Thurgood Marshalls winning argument before the US Supreme Court in the pivotal1954 Brown decision.

This book was a “Lenten reads” selection for our Sunday Forum at my online church. It is excellent. It’s
thick, so seems initially daunting; but the writing style is quite accessible. Pauli Murray was an incredible
woman. It was wonderful to learn about her. I have bought her biography entitled “Jane Crow,” and am
looking forward to learning even more about her.
