Spark of the Resistance (Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker)

Justina Irelands Star Wars: Spark of the Resistance takes place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, helping to build anticipation for the forthcoming film. The story focuses on Rey, Poe Dameron, Rose Tico, and BB-8 taking a detour from bringing supplies to the Resistance in order to undertake a relief mission to the planet Minfar, currently under attack from the First Order. Meanwhile, First Order Commander Branwayne Spiftz works with Professor Glenna Kip to search Minfar for a lost lab containing the Echo Horn, which has the ability to use sound to control any group that hears its call (pg. 60). Kip, however, is not what she seems. The plot, focusing on a world with non-humanoid life and a mysterious weapon, evokes the best of the 1990s Bantam-era Star Wars novels.

As the novel was intended for middle readers, Rey, Poe, and Rose only use the stun setting on their blasters against the First Order stormtroopers rather than the standard setting they typically use in the films. For such a short novel, however, Ireland details how Poe has learned from his mistakes in The Last Jedi (pg. 136) and how Rey continues to learn about the role of the Force in her life (pg. 140). Rose most of all seems to have grown and, if readers are wondering about Finn, Ireland makes it clear that hes on another mission, perhaps to be disclosed in a future novel.

Much like previous books The Weapon of a Jedi, Smugglers Run, Moving Target, Before the Awakening, and Cobalt Squadron, this work contributes to the growing body of literature for middle readers in the new Star Wars canon that tells smaller-scale, character-driven stories with artwork by the amazing Phil Noto, thereby linking each even as different writers add their own authorial voices to the stories. Like those books, this will work well to whet the appetites of Star Wars fans anticipating a new film.

Ive read every piece of canon material and this is one of the worst book. Ever. Ill list some major points of the book that are weird and off of what you will find in other canon pieces.

The book starts with Rose insisting that they divert from their current important mission. I guess she keeps true to her form of interrupting missions for her own agenda. She adds very little to this story. The crew of the falcon easily goes along with her. Later in the book Poe is trying to learn from his mistakes… he just went off mission, AGAIN. Hes not learning anything, so dont tell us that he is.

Commanding first order officers do no believing in the force at all despite Snoke and Kylo Ren and Rey, and Luke Skywalker. General Hux is choked out by Snoke via a hologram of Snoke. The whole bridge crew saw it…. but still the officers in this book dont think the force is real.

Chewbacca is not with the Falcon. Chewbacca is always with the Falcon where is he. The book doesnt say.

Poe and Rey are both in the falcon when they encounter first order Tie fighters. Poe is the best pilot in the galaxy – this is stated in Canon. Rey has barely flown a ship before . Yes she is gifted and has the force, but Poe has been alluded to having force sensitivity (comics), and is also a better pilot than her any day. Why Poe doesnt fly the falcon makes no sense.

The tie fighters shoot the Falcon and take out some of the engines. What happened to the deflector shields? The Falcon has deflector shields! WTF?

Falcon crashes and needs a new housing for the compressor. Rey is worried that if the locals cant provide one, theyre going to be stuck there for a very long time. The Falcon has a long-range comm! Its able to call the resistance and a lot of other people to bring parts and a rescue them. Even if they are off mission, the locals dont need the help. They can get all the help they need just picking up the damn comm link!

Rey only uses her staff to fight off storm troopers shooting at her – she has a light saber! She can beat Kylo ren and all of snokes guards. She could handle these storm troopers with no problem with a light saber but she never does – she neadlessly risks herself, her friends and the resistance by not using all her tools.

Rey never uses her light saber. Light sabers are not even mentioned in this book!

No storm trooper is ever killed by the resistance. They are knocked out or stunned.

I DO LIKE – that Rey is NOT a Jedi. This is now canon!

Over all this book barely scratches the surface of anything Star Wars.

In this lovely junior book, Rey, Rose, Poe and BB-8, return from a mission aboard the Millennium Falcon when they pick up a distress call on a Resistance secret channel. When they arrive to the origin planet, they find a First Order warship and while avoiding TIE Fighters, their ship is damaged and they must land.

On the surface of the planet, they find a new rodent-like alien species, who have been fighting the First Order who are on the look for a powerful weapon kept on abandoned Imperial laboratories. This search is led by an inept First Order officer and an alien scientist.

The Resistance members and their new friends must work together, with some unexpected help, to defeat the First Order and prevent them from obtaining the dangerous weapon.

This is interesting and with some tidbits regarding the reconstruction of the Resistance. Besides it has excellent illustrations by Phil Noto.

Storia “prequel” a Epsiodio IX, sebbene non spartisca nulla con quanto visto sul grande schermo nel Dicembre 2019. Storia tutto sommato semplice e un filo banale, salvata anche dall’edizione in copertina rigida e dalle illustrazioni di Phil Noto.

Escrita para um pblico mais juvenil, a histria simples mas bastante divertida. Uma ventura dos nossos heris que, durante a busca por suprimentos para a ressurgente Resistncia, recebem um chamado de ajuda em um planeta desconhecido. Contm alguns detalhes sobre fatos que ocorreram aps Os ltimos Jedi e que nos levam ao prximo filme.
