SPIDERS TRAP is the first installment in phase 3 of the ELEMENTAL ASSASSIN series. One was Mab Monroe. Two was M. M. Monroe. Three is, well, the ending of this book, and Jennifer Esteps version is gads more awesome than my recap could ever be, so yeah, you should be one-clicking this title right about now. Anyway, moving on, theres also politicking, bombs, blasts from the past, plus tons of good ol fashioned The Spider bravado.

This story had a bit of a different vibe to it with Gin having to act as mediator to the kingpins of the underworld instead of stabbing first, and asking questions later. I enjoyed Blancos not-so-tactful approach to their grievances, and her dialogue was exceptionally strong in this novel from the violent one-liners, to the big-stupid-grin inducing snarky retorts. The fights were aces too, but the character growth was definitely the star.

The author certainly tugged on my heartstrings with this installment; I cant remember the last time that I was this drained after reading an EA title! Fletcher flashbacks are always bitter sweet, and something pretty significant happens to one of the secondaries. Again, Im being Vague McVaguerson here because its better for your sanity if you dont see this one coming. Ive found that the band-aid approach is best in these types of situations.

Ive brought this up on oh close to thirteen occasions now, but Esteps villains are guaranteed crowd pleasers, and this latest enemy was right on the money. He/she wielded a not-so-new elemental power; however their approach and mastery made it feel like it was the first time Id laid eyes on it. The final powwow was inventive, and written in such a way that I could smell the flowers in Ashlands Botanical Gardens, and I think that I may have gotten blood on my shoes.

Thirteen was NOT unlucky for Jennifer Estep. SPIDERS TRAPgo get it!

Spider’s Trap audiobook in series Elemental Assassin

I read this book while on vacation and I came down with a cold. I was miserable and stuck in bed and had forgotten I pre-ordered this book, so I was surprised to see it in my kindle. Boy am I glad I did that!

Coming back to read Gin and the fam was like wrapping a warm blanket around myself and my mom bringing me a bowl of beans and cornbread. I was so happy to be back in the familiar swing of things and loved the new angle Jennifer took with Gin and her not being the actual target this time.

Question: when does Gin grocery shop? Are the sackers afraid of her or do they even know who she is? Does she shop for herself or does someone else do it for her? I’d love to see more into that side of Gin’s life since cooking and food is such an integral part of Gin’s life with her friends and family.

I was very excited about the ending and the unexpected twist with Fin. I also love how Gin couldn’t use her trademark knives in this story and all the unexpected delights this story had to offer.

Gin is sort of like Olivia Benson in SVU for me because I love her and the gang so much and I just pray it never ends. I hope that there is enough crime in Ashland to keep Gin busy and telling her stories for a long long time!

Audiobook Spider’s Trap by Jennifer Estep

I absolutely devoured this book! Which speaks to how great it is, but it’s a bit of a bummer to be done with something so strong so quickly. This series just keeps getting better. The last book was good (nothing in this series has ever been average), but this one just took off and soared. Gin is charge of Ashland’s underworld now and luckily she’s kept her sense of humor intact, as it helps her deal with the bosses’ ridiculous demands. Some of her observational comments about two such bosses in the first couple chapters had me snorting with laughter. Later I was nearly screaming along with Gin, and if I hadn’t just bought a new Kindle, I may have chucked it across the room. But luckily everything turned out okay. And I think I was as floored as Gin at a later revelation in the book, which has major implications for another character, one Gin loves and depends on. So the story and universe is set to expand once again with far-reaching impact. I can’t wait for that – I want to know what Gin decides to do and how the truth comes out (because you know it will).

I have never been disappointed in anything Estep has written, and this is no exception. Her Elemental Assassin series just keeps getting stronger with each installment, Gin and the gang come through some amazing adventures and trials. The last couple books have been a bit more intricate in their involvement of the characters, but this time Gin is a bit more on her own, which was a welcome change to me. I like seeing her rely on herself, but knowing she has her family (because even her friends are Gin’s family, honestly) and they’ll be there to back her if she needs it, but having her more like her old Spider self was fun.

I’m starting to think it’s time for a series reread. Just can’t get enough.

Audio Spider’s Trap narrated by Lauren Fortgang

Have really enjoyed this series and dad it’s ending. But as they say all good things come to an end. Don’t think I could find one good Character that I didn’t like, including Tucker!! Was hoping in my own mind that he would have turned out to be more to her than he was (but that’s my fantasy) not to sure about new stories being about the adventures of the other Characters as that would involve Gin her being who she is. (Trying to not let out any spoilers here) But will enjoy them anyway I expect!!!!

I might take a break as I have read a lot of these in a short space of time. It was OK but unlike some of the others it didn’t blow me away. It also felt a little bit formulaic. It doesn’t detract from this being one of my favourite series.
