Star Wars: Specter of the Past: The Hand of Thrawn series Star War
Just finished this book and loved it! I’m 45, and while I’ve been a Star Wars fan since the original movie came out in 1974, I’ve never read any of the books…mostly because I didn’t read much of anything there for years. Oh, I did read Splinter of the Mind’s eye in Jr. High, I guess. Anyway, when I heard the next trilogy of movies was coming out, I decided I should read some of the “after the movies” stuff. I didn’t know where to start, but many folks seemed to like Timothy Zahn, so I started with the Thrawn Trilogy and loved it, so the Hand of Thrawn was a logical next step.
I have really enjoyed all these books. Zahn is a very good writer and I was very entertained by both of these series. They read quite easily and he has a nice balance between action and character development and includes a nice sense of descriptiveness without being too detailed. I just checked out Survivor’s Quest from the library and plan to read the rest of Zahn’s Star Wars novels, then we’ll see where I go from there!

Audiobook Star Wars: Specter of the Past: The Hand of Thrawn by Troy Denning
which was apparently not proofread at all. It has more typos than any ebooks I’ve ever read, including free public domain works that were compiled through donated time. The ebook sequel to this series (Vision of the Future) is even worse.
Both books read as though the text was scanned in, then converted to electronic text. Periods are misplaced, but the sentence capitalization remains intact. Words are misspelled, replaced with words that look sort of like the proper ones, but aren’t. Hon in place of Han, for example, or, as in Vision of the Future, “Entante Venture” instead of “Errant Venture.” It’s incredibly distracting to have to parse through errors when you’re trying to just focus on the story.
The publisher should be ashamed and embarrassed to put out such a product, especially when it’s restricting Amazon to a retail price as high as the print version, which shows no signs of these egregious errors.
If I could return all my ebooks in this series from this publisher, I would. But apparently Kindle purchases must be returned with 7 days, and I’m a few days too late. I’ve never even thought of returning an ebook until now, but this series certainly qualifies.
If you have the choice, stick to a paper version – preferably used, so this lazy publisher doesn’t gain any further profit. In my opinion, companies that shortchange customers shouldn’t be rewarded.

Audio Star Wars: Specter of the Past: The Hand of Thrawn narrated by Marc Thompson
Timothy Zahn writes compelling stories with believable characters. I could hear Harrison Ford’s voice anytime Han had dialogue. The conversations are believable, and so is the plot. Just like the Thrawn trilogy, this duology is well written and a must-read for those fans of Ep. IV-VI who wanted more story about their favorite characters.
I really, really enjoyed Tim Zahn’s retur to the Star Wars universe, especially since this actually makes political sense. Though I enjoyed the Thrawn trilogy, Thrawn himself was rather annoying, as I am sure that he was to Luke, Leia et al, since he was so good at making their lives miserable. But he was just so omniscient that he was a tad over the top, a Fu Manchu from the Galaxy far, far away. This time, he is just being imitated, with humorous results. Mara Jade is back, too, and nobody does Mara like Zahn does. I don’t think the other authors that touch on her really understand her, at all, least of all B. Hambly. Highly recommended.

Another well written book by Zahn. I enjoy his story development, and the dialog between characters. There is always more depth to his stories than to many in the Star Wars Universe, with a touch of reality added in. I get tired of the magical, unrealistic endings of a few of the authors in Star Wars. All imperials are incompetent or insane tyrants for example, who self destruct through incompetence. Zahn is able to give depth to all sides which I appreciate. With Zahn, he leads you on a path of discovery through his characters, at the same giving his own flair of intrigue and mystery throughout the story.
