While I am a big fan of Crichton, I must admit that “State of Fear” is one of his weaker novels. The plot feels exaggerated and unrealistic, similar to his works “Next” and “The Lost World” (JP II), which I consider his worst. The main characters come across as cartoon superheroes, traveling around the world, and I found it hard to follow the story at times, especially when juggling multiple other books.

The novel revolves around challenging the media, environmentalists, and politicians’ exaggerations about global warming. Crichton presents a polemical message, urging readers to be cautious about blindly accepting predictions based on complex simulation models. He questions the accuracy of forecasting future temperatures and highlights the potential dangers of taking action based on uncertain data.

Crichton’s critiques, rooted in scientific skepticism, are valid, although they might not align with popular beliefs. He emphasizes the importance of extraordinary evidence to support extraordinary claims and warns against the dangers of politicized science. While I understand the need for media campaigns that overstate certain issues for the sake of public safety, Crichton argues that the same approach shouldn’t be applied to global warming without solid scientific evidence.

The novel contains an impressive amount of technical and scientific information, supported by references and a bibliography, which indicates thorough research on the subject. Some readers might have preferred a non-fiction book to deliver this message, akin to the style of Carl Sagan. Nevertheless, Crichton’s fiction format allows him to present his ideas creatively.

Crichton’s critical stance on global warming has sparked controversy and backlash from environmental groups and scientists who support the theory. However, he encourages readers to be skeptical, weigh different perspectives, and form their own conclusions based on reliable sources and research.

In conclusion, “State of Fear” presents thought-provoking arguments about global warming, cautioning against hasty actions without sufficient scientific evidence. Crichton’s intention is not to dismiss environmental concerns but to raise awareness about the complexity of the issue and the need for a thorough examination of the facts. Despite the novel’s fictional nature, its underlying message holds valuable insights for readers to consider.

State of Fear audiobook

I have a deep appreciation for fiction books that seamlessly blend real knowledge into their narratives, and Crichton was undoubtedly one of the masters of this craft. His ability to incorporate insightful information into his stories was truly remarkable. Additionally, the themes of media scare and climate change explored in his works are more relevant and timely than ever before.

Audiobook State of Fear by Michael Crichton

Michael Crichton’s “State of Fear” commences with a physicist’s mysterious death in Paris, following a laboratory experiment for a captivating visitor. Simultaneously, a lethal cavitation technology is acquired in Malaysia, tailored to a buyer’s specifications, while a small research submarine is leased in Vancouver for use off the coast of New Guinea. In the midst of it all, an intelligence agent in Tokyo strives to piece together the puzzle.

This thrilling and provocative technothriller takes readers on an exhilarating journey, masterfully combining science fact and heart-pounding fiction. Michael Crichton’s unique storytelling prowess weaves these diverse elements together, culminating in a heart-stopping conclusion. The novel spans across various locations, from the glaciers of Iceland to the volcanoes of Antarctica, from the Arizona desert to the perilous jungles of the Solomon Islands, and from the streets of Paris to the beaches of Los Angeles. The narrative unfolds at a breakneck pace, engaging the reader in a rollercoaster thrill ride while stimulating the mind with thought-provoking ideas.

For thriller and mystery enthusiasts seeking new reads, “State of Fear” is a pinnacle of the genre. This book’s depth and surprising twists make it both challenging and extraordinary to read. Michael Crichton showcases his unparalleled ability to captivate readers with a gripping narrative, making it a must-read for fans of high-intensity storytelling.

Audio State of Fear narrated by George Wilson

A true exemplar of how to present science without becoming dull. While I didn’t resonate with some of the characters as much, the story has all the makings of a fantastic movie adaptation.

Even though I am a woman, I know what offside is and I am familiar with the players of the national team. My friend Annika thought that was enough reason for me to read a football book, so she gifted me “Fußball Das Allerletzte” for my birthday. I actually read it, and now I know that Annika is a wonderful friend for choosing such a delightful book for me. It’s more of an entertaining novel with short chapters. Some of the stories seem unbelievable at first, and some are quite wicked (like the ones about Rehhagel or Maradona), while others are simply funny, such as the mocking songs about the Dutch or the HSV star with a toupee.
