I liked this story. But, just like all of the author’s books, the chapters are tooooo long. I hate chapters that take 20+ minutes to read. Almost every single chapter could have been split into 2 or 3 chapters. Another complaint I have is that the formatting(?) of the book only shows the book has 1 chapter, therefore instead of my kindle showing me how much time it will take to read each chapter, it showed how long it would take to read the entire book. I really rely on that chapter count to know if I have enough time to read one more chapter or not (especially when I read during my lunch at work).

Cally makes a new friend in this book, and unfortunately loses another. He seems to be close to finishing his quest of finding the original Cycle, but gets diverted by a new quest instead. I’m looking forward to the next one to see how he and his new friend and traveling companion further their quest.

I love all of Ed’s books but found this one to be a bit lacking. Not sure if he’s using this second book in the series to build up for the next one but found it missing the momentum of his other books with the plot direction. Also, some of the graphic descriptions of the nethermancer rituals seemed unnecessary. That said, I still enjoyed Ed’s writing and seeing where he’s taking the Cally storyline. Really love this author and the unique magic systems he imagines!

Audiobook The Black Book (The Cycle of the Scour 2) by Edward W. Robertson

I love the 2 main characters in this great adventure story. The second book in this series continues the adventures of these 2 unlikely characters coming together to save the world. Great bantering between the two gives quirky personalities to these heroes.

Audio The Black Book (The Cycle of the Scour 2) narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds

Seems like lately it’s taken me weeks to finish a book. I didn’t feel inspired to pick up my Kindle and immerse myself in my current read. Then “The Black Book” popped up as newly out and I grabbed it. I consumed it in a few days, taking every opportunity to dive back in. I stayed up later than I should to get just one more chapter in each night. Thank you, I really needed this. Looking forward to the next volume!

The world is consistent. The characters are growing and developing nicely. I love reading a book that I don’t have to edit the whole time. Thank God for good editing and typists!! Keep up the great work!
