The Comeback

This book lagged for me. I had to fight the urge to skip entire pages. This is the story of Grace Turner, who at 23, has been a Hollywood star for close to a decade. She vanishes of her own accord, for a year – severing relationships with her family, young husband, and with Hollywood. Grace is a lost soul in more ways than one . She is attempting to come to terms with the abusive relationship she had with the producer who made her a star. I found this book tedious and somewhat boring…. A bit similar to My Dark Vanessa.

She was so high until she was so low. Hollywood child star. Not of her own making. It happened over night. They made it happen. Well, he made it happen by taking advantage of her. And they helped to make it all vanish. In the sickest of ways. And, then, she came back. There are probably better places to go undetected, but Grace chose to go to her parent’s house, where they wouldn’t pay any attention to her anyhow. In Anaheim. Every day was the same. She had to get away from it all. No more red carpets and movie premieres for her. It was all drugstore outings hidden behind cheap sunglasses and frumpy sweats this time around. Until something compelled her to go back. Or get even. Show the world who he really is. But she needed a plan. This is the ultimate payback and it needed to be masterminded. THE COMEBACK is the ultimate taking control of her life and no longer letting the man who manipulated her during her young, precious years get away with his should-be-behind-bars ways. It’s gripping, seething, it’s smart, good for you, stand up, sister, this is #MeToo, and forget you, creep, and I’ll show you.

I thought it was very depressing and the whole story could have been told in one chapter.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this one. I had seen the cover floating around Instagram and started reading the sample. Right out fo the gate it grabs your attention and there was no way I couldn’t buy the book. There’s something about Grace’s tone that I loved and kind of got annoyed by, but couldn’t stop reading. I found myself surprised by how quickly this turned into a binge read. We all know the premise of the MeToo movement, but this story is much more than that.

“Have you ever seen a sunset like this one? I hope you have, the wild pink sky slashed with flaming streaks of gold, the kind of sunset that makes you feel lucky, golden; the type that has the power to tell you that perhaps, for one small moment in time, you are exactly where you need to be.” This story kept taking me back to the issues Britney Spears has faced and is currently facing. The story lines aren’t exactly similar, but humanity failed both women. This is the story of how one child’s rise to fame changed the course of her life, mostly in negative ways. How one persons abuse towards her at such an imperative age sent her into a spiral unable to trust anyone, not even her parents. I kept waiting for the climax of this story to hit, but it was just mediocre through and through. It did enough to keep it free or the DNF shelf, but not much extra.
