The Counterfeit Madam

Pat McIntosh is the best historic mystery writer working right now, with the exception of Lindsey Davis. Disagree? I\’d love to hear about any other writer in this form whose work is as vivid, deeply researched without any boring showing off about it, full of characters who behave and talk in believably medieval ways but whom you care about as though you\’d met them – and who creates mysteries where you have to keep on reading because you have no idea where the mystery is going. This is the best so far. Even the title turns out to have multiple layers, and the themes of the story come together in ways that even very experienced mystery readers are unlikely to predict. I bought this for my Kindle as my local library hasn\’t bought this, read till midnight then put off things I needed to do so I could find out how it all comes out – not just the solution, but what happens to Gil and and Alys and their families.

Great, clean mystery with great character development.

It\’s hard to maintain a series and keep the the stories fresh, but this one manages to do just that. Perhaps not a genre that appeals to a large audience but I find it enthralling, trying to imagine life in a world so totally different to our modern world, where life was so much harder and tougher, and written in a way that brings the scenes to life.

Another great book in the series.
