THE DARK ROSE is Cynthia Harrold-Eagle’s second novel in her MORLAND DYNASTY series, and it is every bit as good as the first.
I love the ambiguity of the title. Usually, a book with “rose” in the title refers to the Wars of the Roses, but the main part of this novel takes place between 1514 and 1550, too late to be in that time period. So who is the dark rose? Does it refer to Henry VIII (grandson of the White Rose of York Edward IV), the dark tyrant who beheaded two of his wives? Or does it refer to Anne Boleyn, the dark-haired beauty who so captured his heart?
Yes, you got it, this is yet another novel about Anne Boleyn. But this one is so much more successful that TO DIE FOR, which I reviewed a few weeks ago. To begin with, the fictional narrator, Nanette Morland, has such an interesting personal history that is so completely gripping and fascinating, that when they are confiding secrets in a bedchamber together one night, you almost wish that Anne Boleyn would shut up about the King of England’s infatuation with her, so that you can hear more about Nanette’s story. That is really quite a feat!
And because Nanette’s story is so fascinating, the novel doesn’t die when Anne Boleyn dies. Instead, it becomes just as gripping as we follow Nanette through the rest of her life, as she finally blooms under the love of two good men. Five stars.

The Dark Rose audiobook in series Morland Dynasty
The second book in the Morland Dynasty series can be read as a stand-alone novel. It starts approximately during 1501, a few years after Henry VIII comes to the throne. It ends around 1548, a year after his death.
Henry VIII’s reign serves as a backdrop, especially his relationship with his first 3 wives – Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour. But story centers around the Morland family with a focus on Paul Morland (age 10 at the end of the first book, THE FOUNDING) and Nannette (Anne Morland), who is introduce during this book (b. 1508).
Harrod-Eagles deals historically accurately with a sensitive topic – carnal love between family members. In addition to the intrigue at Henry’s court, there’s conflict and strife within the Morland family.
The novel moves along at a rapid pace. It’s a fast read with neither an abundance of historical detail nor romance. Just perfect for unwinding after a busy day.

Audiobook The Dark Rose by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles
Paul Morland, the great-grandson of Eleanor Morland is the master Morland Place. He is also a man who is caught up the jealousy between his heir Amyas and his illegitimate son Andrian maybe the downfall of the whole Morland family. Mean while Paul’s niece Nanette has gone to court to be maid-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn.
“The Dark Rose” is the second book in the Morland series by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles and with the first book I really enjoyed it. Ms. Harrod-Ealgle gives the reader rich and interesting characters. I can’t wait to start the book in the series.

Audio The Dark Rose narrated by Christopher Scott
The Morland family always seems to find a way to find its way into the great moments of history. Not unlike Forrest Gump. Henry VIII is dead as are all of his wives. The Morland matriarch in this book spent most of her time at court, but found time to marry her uncle (not really — both the women and the men found plenty of time for extracurricular activities). She ends up childless after spending too much time away. Probably for the best since the degrees of separation are too few when it comes to gentry marriages. By the end of his book, the boy king is on the throne and Princesses Elizabeth and Mary each have their supporters and detractors. Not sure where the Morlands will turn up in Book 3 but I want to find out! On to the Princeling.

I just finished book and I loved it! The author truly makes takes you back in time to feel like you’re there right with the characters. Book two certajnly adds depth to the series and I can only assume that continues throughout until the series is well founded and takes its course. It has certainly taken course already and a very enjoyable one at that. I enjoy both, the fiction and the history part of it all and can’t wait to start the next!
