With The Far Side of the Stars audiobook in series RCN Series

A peace has been signed and the Princess Cecile will be sold out of RCN service. But Daniel Leary and Adele Mindy will continue their adventures aboard her with the new aristocrat owners in a rip roaring expedition to he galactic north. Dragons, political divisions, old conspiracies, and a quest for a priceless jewel aren’t complications enough – the peace treaty may have been signed, but peace is far from a given.

I love the characters in the Lt. Leary series and looked forward to the next installment. But I was a bit disappointed with The Far Side of the Stars. The characters, especially Daniel, turned one dimensional. Instead of being well knit with the characters triumphing through their own abilities, the storyline is very choppy, very contrived, and not very believable. Lt. Mon is gotten out of the way with scarcely a “By God” and never seen or heard of again, though the character and his fate should have been worth some further discussion. The crew has to leap from planet to planet, never getting a good picture/feel for any of them, to set up a completely unbelievable set of coincidences. The merging with the tree is a VERY old theme, and stretches happenstance way too far since Daniel’s neighbor just happens to be…(take a guess. You could see it coming from the time they landed on that particular planet) The convenient rich couple who are conveniently gotten out of the way (sort of like Lt. Mon) and the last second reformation of old Cinnebar citizens are just too much. However, it’s hard for Mr. Drake to write a bad book. And with those characters, it’s even harder. But he did try. I hope the next ‘Lt. Leary’ has a bit more thought and originality to it.

Audiobook The Far Side of the Stars by David Drake

I love these stories – I have the series in hardback and bought the Kindle books so I would not have to haul the hardbacks around. If I like the stories and characters, I will buy the hardbacks for my library and buy it again for the Kindle. Hauling a Kindle around is easier and holds more books. It also works in reverse. If I buy the Kindle version and love it, I will buy the hardback copy (if there is one). In this case, I have enjoyed both the story plots and the character growth of Lt. Leary and Adele for a number of years.

Audio The Far Side of the Stars narrated by David Drake

This is Drake’s third in his series about Lt. Daniel Leary of the Republic of Cinnabar Navy. In this tale his beloved ship, the corvette Princess Cecile is sold to a private buyer. The bold young Lieutenant and his sailors go along as crew for a mega-rich client on a quest to a far corner of known space. The space travelers encounter some truly bizarre stuff out there but manage to get into a lopsided fight with minions of the Alliance, the sworn enemies of the Republic of Cinnabar.
The fight at the culmination of the adventure is worth the price of admission. I like young Leary and his side kick signals officer Adele Mundy but this isn’t the best example of their adventures. Don’t let that discourage you. A medium warm David Drake is better than most of the other stuff out there.
“Far Side of the Stars” will engage your attention for a pleasant few hours. I look forward to meeting Lt. Leary and Officer Mundy in the next episode.

Once again Lt. Leary and Adele Mundy must save the Republic from certain doom. This time they’re contracted by eccentric nobles to explore a backwater part of the galaxy as the Princess Cecile has been sold as a yacht. There is just a little tiny bit of either hard sci fi or religion, depending on how you look at it, but overall another great page turner with characters everyone who’s ever read the series knows and loves.

David Drake writes gritty, real novels about people in untenable situations who somehow get by. His life has given him the fodder that is needed to avoid glorifying battle while still allowing that sometimes it may just be needed. I’ve purchased a number of his books for reading on the Kindle, and now I seldom put the darn thing down.
