This book is worth reading if only for its detailed examination of the British situation at Yorktown. It is also a substantial improvement on the first volume, for those who felt it had too much graphic sex; that’s been dialed back. In this volume, the Flashman-like cad Midshipman is starting to gain his sealegs and wonder whether he may have found his calling … at least until there is enough prize money to secure a place among the gentry.

The French Admiral audiobook in series Alan Lewrie

I have read a lot of books in this genre. Over the years I’ve mixed a lot of fictional series about figures in the British Navy and non-fictional books about British Naval history on battles and exploration. The one aspect that I’ve consistently found lacking in historical fiction is that the main characters are never exposed to the kind of diversity that accompanies real life. And anyone who has read Dudley Pope’s “Ramage” series knows that reading about the guy who has the most dangerous job on earth never gets hurt, never misses the kiss the with the girl, and never always escapes punishment, can get pretty tiring. In this series Dewey Lambdin (author) introduces us to Alan Lewrie; a young man who is intelligent but limits his own successes through a series of very human mistakes that any young person would make.

For the first time since I finished the Master and Commander series I actually feel as I’m reading a novel about a person and not some overly-virtuous and indestructible demigod (like Ramage, Hornblower, and too many other fictional characters). And I am truly enjoying this read!

The only detracting thing about this series would be that if I had young children I may not let them read it because there is a small amount of sexual content that may not be suitable for small kids. Fortunately I’m an adult and can enjoy the amazing prose that Dewey Lambdin brings us!

Audiobook The French Admiral by Lambdin

The French Admiral in paper has been awaited by Alan Lewrie fans since 1990. It is the crucial #2 “missing link” from early in the series of Alan’s swashbuckling adventures in the age of fighting sail. Although we know the general events of this long-missing novel about the Royal Navy from references in succeeding books, it comes as a throwback to the exciting rakehell that Lewrie was early in his career. The alleged orphan [] of a scheming English knight, Lewrie has a most modest opinion of himself, although he comes of age as a mariner in the course of this pivotal novel. American readers will be most interested that this novel takes place on the Eastern Seaboard, especially during the crucial siege of Cornwallis’ troops at York Town. (From the detailed sailing descriptions in the Chesapeake Bay it’s a good bet that Lambdin sails there often.) This story offers a chance for an extended look, from the British point of view, at the vicious enmities and fighting that characterized the American Revolution in the genteel South. It does not, however, offer the least personal glimpse of the French Admiral. That august and triumphant sailor, the shipbound Admiral de Grasse, is instrumental in the series of British blunders and defeats that lose the rebel American colonies to England.
The language is a bit rougher than is the salty talk customary in sea stories by genuine British authors. I wonder if Lambdin chose “Lewrie” as his hero’s name because it resembles lurid and lewd, which Alan is, although he’s not a scoundrel as well. This is a physically bigger book than the other Lambdin pb’s I’ve read, thanks to the customarily expansive McBooks Press edition (i.e., larger type and better paper than the stubby Fawcett Crest/Ballantine editions).

Audio The French Admiral narrated by John Lee

Delightful .. The young British Navy officer participates in the American Revolutionary War and gives us a very different take on the Battle of Yorktown. An interesting change from most of these sea stories which deal only with the Napoleonic Wars. The characters are well defined & amusing, and the battles very well presented. A very good read indeed! Second Book in what looks like a great series.

Part 2 of this series captures the excitement of youth and the changing life a young teenager who is turning into a man. I absolutely love this series and this book has been and will continue to be recommended by myself for as long as breadth is within me. Thank You Mr Lambdin

Lambdin captures the great events of the era, while continuing to develop the Alan Lewrie character. He experiences great battles on sea and in the field, losing friends as well as enemies, the pride and relief of victory and the frutrating agony of defeat, the fog of battle, and the surprise of discovering he’s in love. The book gives insight into the life of a young midshipman in the Royal Navy during the end of the American Revolution, with realistic, well-researched fictional accounts of historic events. An easy read, and thoroughly enjoyable. Kudos, Dewey!

The author continues the story in the second novel of the series with the main character’s involvement in the battle of Yorktown. The author does a magnificent job at recreating history of the battle and detailing the accurate geography of the areas he refers to. He also stays true to the history of the weapons and strategies of war employed during this time period.
