This is a continuing saga of Cedar Cove. There are several twists and turns in this book. There are there main sets of characters throughout the book. There are resolution of a couple and then one that will get their answers in a later book. I know this because I already read that book. I have heard great things about the author. I have one great peeve, is I don’t like sagas. I don’t mind two or four books to read in series but sagas are too much like watching a soap opera. Never liked watching them.

Debbie Macomber‘s 16 lighthouse Rd., book one of her Cedar Cove series, is a delightful read. Filled with characters that are highly relatable I found it an absolute joy.

In the beginning I found it difficult to remember each character and how their story contributed to the overall storyline. However, midway through I noted the pattern and was able to follow along.

16 Lighthouse Road audiobook in series Cedar Cove

This was my first Debbie Macomber novel in the Cedar Cove series, and is the first in the Cedar Cove series. I hope to be able to purchase the remaining novels in the series. She’s a very good writer, and her characters were varied and all of them quite interesting, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Charlotte Jefferson with Justine, Judge Olivia Lockhart’s, daughter, following a close second. I kept wanting to pinch Justine’s head off, but I hung on to the hope that she would make the right choice in the end. And no, I won’t spoil it by telling you which choice she made.

Grace Sherman, Olivia’s best friend, plays a large part in the storyline. Her relationship with her daughters, Maryellen and Kelly, was interesting. Although the two girls disagreed with the right choice for Grace to make when her husband and their father, Dan, disappeared, they still supported one another.

This novel left me with a satisfied feeling that all was well in Cedar Cove!

And now I have to tell you that the reason I chose this book to read, silly though it may sound. I am fascinated with Lighthouses, and have a pretty large collection of them, including large and small figures, paintings, pictures, and yes, even a Lighthouse Encyclopedia, complete with photos and histories of actual lighthouses from all over the world.

Audiobook 16 Lighthouse Road Lane by Cedar Cove

This book was decent, and the characters are somewhat connected because of the small town setting. What I wasn’t fond of was the POV from many characters, and their story lines were not that closely tied together. It felt like a lot of smaller stories wrapped into one book. As another reviewer suggested, it seems like a soap opera to have so many. It’s not that dramatic, but I understand what they were saying. I did become interested in the book, the characters, and the various plots. I’m just not sure I’ll read twelve of them.

Caveat–I LOVE the Hallmark Channel TV series of Cedar Cove that lasted 3 seasons–watched it 3 or 4 times!
So I finally decided to try Debbie Macombers books of the series.
I realize TV/Movie productions of an author’s work often differ from the books, so was expecting some changes!
But Where in the World is MOON, the grizzled old hippie who runs Moon’s Cafe in the show, which is one of the show’s central stomping grounds??
Moon’s character is fascinating (being an old hippie myself!), and he’s involved in everyone’s lives (as well as Cedar Cove itself), that I found it a great disappointment and loss to find him (and the Cafe) nowhere to be found in this novel!
The other important characters from the first season–Judge Olivia Lockhart, Charlotte (Olivia’s mother), Justine (her daughter), Grace (her BFF), Warren Saget (the bad guy!), even Ian and Cecilia Randall, the young couple whose divorce proceeding begins the show’s 1st episode–are all in this book!
Here’s 2 more differences–
Jack Griffith, the CedarCove Chronicle editor/writer, is from Spokane WA, not Philadelphia, in the book!
His son Eric works in computers in Seattle, and had cancer when younger!
One more change–
Charlotte’s friend in the care home (Tom Harding–different spelling) is NOT an old country music star!

While the book is interesting (I bought the 2nd & 3rd books in the series also, and will read them too!), and has SOME of the flavor of the TV show, I really MISS Moon and everything he gave to the show!

Audio 16 Lighthouse Road narrated by Sandra Burr

Judge Olivia Lockheart has inadvertantly caused a scandal. When the divorce petition of Cecilia and Ian Randal appeared on her docket, she decided they needed to work harder on their marriage and returned a shocking verdict – divorce denied! But Olivia has issues of her own with her blossoming interest in local newspaper man Jack. Not to mention her daughter Justine is dating an inappropriate man, her best friend Grace’s marriage is in trouble and her mother’s mysterious new friend Tom.

This is the first book in the Cedar Cove series and, despite being a fan of Debbie Macomber, a book I’ve been putting off reading. From the blurb it sounds like Olivia rules against Cecilia and Ian fairly randomly, but it turns out their story is heartbreaking. Their whirlwind romance ended in tragedy when their newborn daughter was born prematurely and died while Ian was uncontactable on a Navy submarine. Olivia’s judgement becomes understandable as the two have barely spoken since Ian’s return. I found myself really rooting for the couple and hoping they’d sort out their issues.

The strength of the book lies in its characters, each of whom is likeable and has their own story to tell. Aside Cecilia and Ian’s relationship, there are several other storylines. Olivia finds herself drawn to Jack who runs the local newspaper. He’s new to Cedar Cove and is keeping some secrets. Another plot line is given to Olivia’s daughter Justine who is in a relationship of convenience, dating an older man as a well kept trophy. Justine has never wanted a long term commitment, but Olivia worries she’s missing out.

Grace Harding is Olivia’s best friend, and she’s having problems of her own. Her husband is becoming increasingly distant, hiding things and changing his schedule. They’ve been married for 35 years and Grace worries that Dan has found another woman. Olivia’s mother Charlotte has her own story revolving around her friendship with Tom, a patient at a local care home.

Cedar Cove itself is a cleverly developed town that really sounds like a place I’d like to visit. Loosely based on the author’s own home town, Cedar Cove manages to tie the storylines together keeping the book coherent and well paced. Quite a long time passes during the book (almost a year) so the story has a grounded, realistic feel as problems aren’t sorted out magically overnight.

As a fan of the t.v. show I was not disappointed. The favourite characters were there and new ones brought in to add depth to the story with 4 story lines mingling in with each other it was a super book I was pleased that there is a whole series to read Debbie Macomber is an excellent writer and each character was brought to life with a believable story line. Olivia and Jack, Grace and Dan, Charlotte, Bill and Peggy are all there each having a story to tell. Finished it in 2 days cant wit to get started on 204 Rosewood Lane now.
If you liked the T.V series you will love these books.

The first in the Cedar Cove series was also my first experience of Debbie Macomber’s work. Easy to read (I completed this one in an afternoon/evening but then I am confined to sofa with a broken foot!) with well-drawn characters who interact logically, I found myself readily drawn in and followed the different little plots without confusion. It works as a stand-alone as well as part of a series but of course I want to know what happens to Grace so I’ve got 204 Rosewood Lane winging its way to me and can envisage working my way through the others over the summer. Great for holiday reading but be careful when you start reading – you won’t want to put it down!
