First, I keep seeing the ad for this book on Facebook and I commented that the series ( I bought all 7) was shallow and had no character development. There were gaping plot holes and it read more like a die hard movie than a deep thinking story that it started out to be. The plot completely changes as If someone else started writing it in the middle. This was my honest review. They also banned me from their Facebook page and deleted my review which was deceitful and theyre just trying to sell more books. If you read most of the reviews of this series, youll see its not that good. Book one is compelling. The other books have you skipping pages because its some sort of impossible shoot out every other page. The plot is weak and makes no sense past the first book. I did buy all 7 and read them just to see how it ended and was as disappointed as I thought I would be. If you like the shoot up kind of action books, youll probably be entertained. If youre looking for a good story line with compelling characters, dont bother.

The Gender Game audiobook in series The Gender Game

I must be one of the only people to not like this book. There are tons of 5 star reviews, but I honestly can’t see why. I slogged through this book and almost gave up on it completely about halfway through. It is a very interesting premise, but I really didn’t like the characters very much. The dialogue seemed forced in many places, and I didn’t buy the romance. Maybe all of these things are better developed later in the series, but I struggled to make it through, only doing so to see what the twist ending was. I skimmed the last quarter of the story, and only the twist was interesting, though not enough for me to read the next book. This world wasn’t as appealing as Panem or the Chicago of Divergent, and the characters were much less so.

The Gender Game audiobook by Bella Forrest

Substandard and amateurishly plotted, read only if you enjoy one implausible, patience-challenging “plot” turn after another. Not even close to being in the same league as The Hunger Games & the first installment of Divergent and such comparisons should be deleted from all puffery, because, unfortunately, that’s what drew me in.

The Gender Game audio narrated by Rebecca Soler Zachary Webber

Claiming to be the The Hunger Games meets the Divergent Series, I was curious yet skeptical. This book was a Kindle First/Amazon First read, meaning it was free and they are trying to garner more reviews – so here I am!

The story goes that Violet, born and raised on the matriarch side of post-America goes to the patriarchal side of post-America in order to help the queen on a secret mission.

The Gender Game was a quick, easy read and had me trying to predict what would happen next. The author dropped hints that helped guide the story in a predictable way. For example, when Violet sees a picture of Viggo, she internally states that hes attractive. Well, then it came as no surprise that when they met in person she had the hots for him and ended up spending all her time with this guy, falling for him.

Because of these obvious plot Easter eggs, I found myself trying to determine how the series will end. Then this little nugget arrived:

That didn’t stop me wondering whether things might change someday. Whether some queen and king might eventually ascend to the two nations’ thrones and put an end to rules like this. Though I knew it was a dream. We had lived like this for centuries and it seemed that, as the years passed, both governments were only coming up with more enforcements to keep us ingrained in our ways. I didn’t see why anything would change. At least not in my lifetime.

Perhaps a Queen Violet and King Viggo in the readers future? I dont know, but its my prediction.

While reading I didnt know that there was a series at all, but thought it was a stand alone book. Silly me. Not only are there more books, but there are SEVEN in the series. Now, did I enjoy this? Sure. But enough to want to read about it six more times? No. This isnt Harry Potter and its not even Hunger Games so… no. Based on the fact that the story doesnt end until six books later, Im going to walk away from this one. Its not worth the commitment. (Also, the remainder of the series isnt available in hardcover while the first story is, which was a huge turn off to me as a collector of hardcovers.)

If you want an interesting, fast paced YA read then sure, check this book out. But does it hold a candle to its claims of being a Hunger Games, Divergent Series contender? No.

free audio The Gender Game – in the audio player below

Update: This series is just one story broken up into 7 books. Unlike many series books which can stand on their on in this one each book ends in a cliff hanger requiring that you purchase the next book in the series to get any kind of resolution. It’s extortion, don’t start the series because you will just end up having to purchase 7 books to complete the story.

Original review:
I started reading this with some reservations, but it was very engaging and entertaining. The main thing I didnt like was it ended in a cliff hanger that requires ours chasing the next book in the series. That sucks.
