This book is a great conclusion to Ludlow\’s `Republic\’ trilogy. By the time I finished the novel I was eager to read more and I had hoped that the author might have contemplated writing a fourth novel as there is great scope to continue the saga. Book three not only tidies up a lot of loose ends but, also produces the results the reader hopes for during the novel. Titus, the commander of the victorious Roman army in Spain, returns for his triumph in Rome and stands up to his overbearing brother Quintus in ways he couldn\’t in the past. Aquila gets the recognition he deserved for his military prowess and discovers his true parents and identity. Claudia finally finds her son and Brennos, the Celtic rebel leader, gets his just desserts. This book is full of adventure, many emotional moments and breathtaking military action. All three books are a great insight into everyday Roman life, the extreme arrogance of senators who felt they were born to rule and that no one below them should question their place in society. These were the times in the Roman Republic before the likes of Marius, Sulla, Pompey and Julius Caesar who redefined the rights of Roman citizenship.

Jack Ludlow\’s historic tales of war are exciting and he paints a picture for the reader about the hardships and misery of the armies as you can imagine they were.

I read this book with interest as it was the third (and last???) in the republic series. However, I was disappointed at the end because the conclusion left me hanging. Earlier in the story, it was said that the hero would be standing in the temple of Jupiter with a sword in his hand having conquered Rome but we did not see that. Is there a fourth volume in the series where we will see that happen? Hope so!
