Some time ago, I had the pleasure of reading the first Max Rupert book, “The Life We Bury,” and it left a lasting impression on me. However, amidst the busyness of life and the overwhelming number of books out there, I had forgotten about it. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon reviews of the second installment in the Max Rupert series that my memory was jogged, and I found myself instantly captivated by it. This book seamlessly combines elements of mystery, thriller, and police procedural, intricately weaving in the politics of the police department and a riveting cat-and-mouse game. Right from the start, we are introduced to a man living under the false identity of James Putnam, and from there, the story takes off like a rocket, refusing to let go of the reader’s attention.

While I initially believed that the main character would be Max Rupert’s brother, Alexander Rupert (we learn more about him later on), it becomes clear that he cannot let the case go, even when it could have been resolved early on. Thus, the chase and the web of intrigue unfold, leading us to Iowa, New York City, and back to Minnesota. Concurrently, a gripping side plot emerges, entangling Alexander in trouble with the law, his career, personal life, and marriage. The pace of the story is brisk, with a host of nefarious villains, some of whom catch us off guard, and the lingering aftermath of a profound secret. The ending left me utterly stunned on multiple occasions, as the narrative took unexpected turns that I never saw coming. Eskens proves his exceptional storytelling prowess once again, and I eagerly anticipate seeking out his future works.

The Guise of Another audiobook Series Shifters Unbound

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed “The Life We Bury,” prompting me to give this other book by the same author a chance. I appreciated the presence of the detective in both books, linking them to the same area and potentially setting the stage for a long-lasting connection. However, this story, being centered around fully grown adults without an innocent in need of protection, feels slightly less emotionally gripping than “The Life We Bury.” What intrigues me in this book is my love-hate relationship with the lack of a clear happy ending. It’s a sort of moral lesson that suggests any wrongdoing, even just harboring negative thoughts, leads to dire consequences. We all have our moments of flaws or dark thoughts now and then. Eskens seems to have complete control over every situation and delights in throwing unexpected twists. It will be fascinating to witness his evolution as a writer, whether he continues with this detective as the protagonist in an ongoing series like Sanford, Deaver, Connelly, and others, or if Eskens chooses a different path. Additionally, it remains to be seen if he can maintain this tight control over a long writing career. Once you surpass the initial phase of introducing and building the characters, the stories progress rapidly, allowing me to finish them in less than 10 hours of dedicated reading, with minimal interruptions for bathroom breaks and sustenance. This speaks volumes about the gripping nature of his tales.

Audiobook The Guise of Another by Cris Dukehart

Once again, Allen delivers an enthralling experience that is both suspenseful and thoroughly enjoyable! The second book in the series maintains the same level of quality and does not disappoint. In fact, I have already had the pleasure of reading several books from this series, and I must say, I love them all.

Audio The Guise of Another narrated by Cris Dukehart

I rated this book with four stars because I feel it’s a bit of a stretch to label it as the second installment in the Max Rupert and Joe Talbert series. Joe is notably absent from this book, and Max’s presence is relatively minimal. Additionally, there is an excessive amount of innocent people being killed. While I understand that such events occur in reality, it’s not the type of content I prefer to read. I thoroughly enjoyed “The Lives We Bury” and even read it twice, but I was left disappointed with this particular book due to the abundance of killing and its departure from being a true sequel to TLWB.

This is a masterfully crafted novel that delves into the complexities of living a double life. Detective Alexander Rupert finds himself reassigned to the Frauds Unit, a significant step down from his previous role in Narcotics, where he worked undercover. Rumors of missing money from major busts during his time on the task force led to his current predicament. Now confined to the basement of the precinct, awaiting a hearing, he battles boredom that threatens to consume him.

One day, a slick insurance agent named Dogget, notorious for chasing after ambulances, approaches Detective Rupert with a crime report. Dogget had been investigating a car accident, hoping to pursue a lawsuit on behalf of the deceased driver’s surviving relatives. However, he hits a dead end when trying to locate any family members connected to the driver, James Putnam. Following a lead through Putnam’s girlfriend, Detective Rupert uncovers a brother who is serving time in the Clinton Correctional Facility. As the brother gazes upon Putnam’s photo on his driver’s license, he vehemently denies that the person depicted is his sibling, stating that his brother is deceased. With this revelation, Detective Rupert embarks on an intriguing journey to unravel the truth behind Putnam’s disappearance and the motives driving his impersonator to assume his identity. Along the way, Detective Rupert’s quest also leads him to profound self-discovery.

The novel is a riveting exploration of mystery and self-discovery, skillfully unveiling the secrets behind the dual lives being lived. Detective Rupert’s determination to uncover the truth about James Putnam and his impersonator is intricately woven into a captivating narrative, immersing readers in a world of intrigue and revelation.
