The Intimidators audiobook free
This is a typical Matt Helm novel. It is fast paced, well written and, as usual, the reader is much smarter than Helm and can see the trouble he is going to get into before he can. He is always walking into traps set by the bad guys. He usually gets played for a fool by at least one women, and sometimes several. He gets captured, beat up and occasionally tortured and the reader sees it all coming but can do nothing to help him avoid his fate. It is great fun. In this book, although a number of people die violent deaths as usual, Helm only kills one and maims two himself which is a very low production total for him. I normally would rate a Matt Helm book five stars but this one only got four because he was a little passive in this one. To enjoy Matt Helm you can’t read just one book, you must really read the series and although you can jump in at any time it is more fun to start from the beginning.

The Intimidators audiobook in series Matt Helm
Fun in the sun – the Florida keys, the Bahamas, and even a little bit of Cuba. Throw in the Bermuda Triangle, wholesale kidnapping, and an old combatant, and you end up with a heck of a yarn.
Amazing, realistic, gritty, non PC character and series. Believable in its time frame and good. Can’t get enough. Sad there are only 26. Noting like the silly films (sorry, Dino!) and boring TV series (Tony Fransciosa).. Truly a breath of fresh air. Just read the first one. Can’t recommend enough.

Audiobook The Retaliators by Donald Hamilton
Matt Helm books are what you pick up when you want a good EASY read. They’re not as philosophical as John D. McDonald’s Travis McGee novels or as complex as Robert Ludlum novels. (Both favorites) They will entertain you without taxing your concentration. Good before bed reads.
While a bit predictable, a reliably entertaining yarn, realistic in the tradition of the James Bond books by Fleming (not the movies).

The best way to read the Matt Helm books is in the order Donald Hamilton wrote them, so I would not start here though one could. As you read through them in order, which I have been doing as they become available on Kindle, you get to know Matt Helm. He’s a character you can like without liking everything about him or approving everything, which is the way I think the author wanted it. It also helps in my case that I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s and can relate well to the world Hamilton describes and its changes through the years. Hamilton can tell a gritty story, and weave in sex appeal, without being crude or any use of the vulgarity now so commonly confused with authenticity. These books are impossible to put down and a great read for adult readers who want something that is both scintillating and believable (a rare combination in this genre).

Although Donald Hamilton writes with his usual brisk style and gives a convincing feel for the exotic locations visited, after a strong start the story ultimately proves to be rather uninvolving, and – despite ending with a bang – not all that memorable. More for Helm completists than new readers.
