Another very good, fairly complicated adventure by Hamilton in the mid-1970’s. This time, Helm is in Norway during autumn, lent out for his lethal reputation. That causes some problems, of course. Not everyone is as impressed as they should be. Just who are the good guys & what is going on isn’t really clear until the climactic ending.

As usual, the descriptions of the area are good, providing just enough detail without bogging down the story. Some history of WWII is brought in, but Hamilton leaves Helm’s participation open. The current issues are the oil crisis with the long lines at the pumps or even the complete lack of fuel. It brought back a lot of memories of the time.

Hamilton also rants about safety devices, especially in cars, a subject near & dear to my own heart. The idea of ‘safety first’ was just rearing its ugly head as cars started getting all kinds of warning devices. His observations are spot on.

Of course, the trend grew & spread until some tools became practically useless, requiring the customer to modify them so they’ll perform their original function, if it is even possible. For instance, Dewalt no longer even makes a 3/8″ drill with a trigger lock due to OSHA regulations, but has one on their 1/2″ drill. It took me hours to modify my 2008 John Deere riding mower before it would mow half my lawn. How ridiculous!!!

The Terminators audiobook in series Matt Helm

Donald Hamilton used contemporary events as a foundation for his novels and to enhance believability. The oil crisis of the early Seventies sets the stage for “The Terminators” as multiple greedy businessmen scramble to scam their way to the top. There is also the Environmental Protection Agency and its impact on boat owners. Character Matt Helm, aka Erick, is assigned to play scarecrow as a favor to his boss’s oldest and best friend. Taking place in the cold, dark coastal area of Norway, A legendary underground warrior makes an appearance. Eric is a good man doing a very dirty but necessary job.
I liked Donald Hamilton’s assassin character. Great guy to have on your side–but fatal to have as an enemy.

Audiobook The Terminators by Donald Hamilton

I read this series long ago when they first came out in paperback. My kids gave me a Kindle, so I get to enjoy reading them again. The character in the book is both pragmatic and thoughtful, although his walking into obvious and well set traps can make you wonder. The books are highly entertaining and a fast read for anyone looking for good suspense and outstanding action. The conflicts between the bad guys, his boss, and the Washington do gooder bureaucracy make the story complex and fascinating. I wonder what Frank Church would think of Matt Helm?

Audio The Terminators narrated by Stefan Rudnicki

One of the great Matt Helm novels .Totally different from previous novels. Keeps you guessing until the end when Matt finally figures everything out. I couldn’t put it down.

Lots of twists and turns in this one, even without any cold war trappings. Boating around Nordic fjords provides the scenery. Hamilton writes wonderfully direct and gritty prose. He tells a great story. He also often write with knowledge about places and things that don’t often show up in espionage and intrigue thrillers, as he’s done here with oil drilling and Scandinavia. Another super Matt helm story. .

I first read the Helm books when I was in high school. I enjoyed them then. I was very disappointed when they were filmed with Dean Martin as Helm. I thought Sterling Hayden would have been perfect. However, the book did not hold up for me. It is certainly of its time but that time is long gone.

I am totally enjoying the whole series…there is a different view point on the plight of agents working to maintain the status quo for civilization. It has spawned some serious conversations! Love Matt Helm!
