This book was a DELIGHT! Part Mean Girls, part Real Housewives, a boatload (see what I did there?!) of intrigue, and beautifully described setting on the French and Italian Riviera. This was the perfect escape read for a summer weekend.

Belle is excited to be going on her first Mediterranean cruise aboard a yacht owned by her best friend’s fiance to celebrate her birthday. Joining them is her best friend, Summer’s mother and sister as well as two more of their friends. The first indication that there is something wrong with this trip is when they are not only made to wait for hours before boarding the private plane that will take them to the yacht, but there is a seating chart once they get on board. Belle knows that she will be sick if she is made to sit facing the back of the plane, but she is not allowed to move out of her assigned seat. Things just get stranger from there as Belle realizes that once they board the yacht, they are being locked in their cabins at night.
The Lion’s Den is a bizarre story that starts out as a simple rivalry between friends but slowly turns into something more sinister. There are two narratives being told in alternating chapters. One takes place in the present, following Belle on her trip aboard the yacht; the other begins ten years ago and finally meets the current story in the very last chapter. Much of the story wreaks of melodrama that deteriorates into some kind of spy adventure. Having said that, however, I was extremely anxious to get to the finish in order to find out what actually happens. Some details are left as loose ends, but for the most part, the story is completed with a relatively satisfying but somewhat patronizing ending.

Audiobook The Lion’s Den by Katherine St. John

This is a fun and light hearted book that I enjoyed reading. However, just once it would be great if the heroine in one of these books wasnt quirky and awkward and poor and smarter than everyone else. Belle is someone who is more concerned with assuming that the Italian businessmen shes just met at lunch are morally corrupt than she is with enjoying her delicious lunch or the amazing scenery. Its a little played and her moral superiority complex is irritating to the reader and apparently to her friends also.

Audio The Lion’s Den narrated by Christine Lakin

Soapy, dramatic and fun! The Lions Den was exactly what I wanted it to be. Pretty Little Liars meets How to Get Away with Murder vibes in this one.

Have you ever had that one friend who is your friend for reasons you cant explain? You liked her at one point but somewhere along the way it stopped being what it once was, but youre bonded by a shared history so you just keep being friends. Thats Summer and Belle. Summer is that roller coaster friend who is sometimes up and sometimes down in the game of life. At the start of this book she is up and dating a billionaire old enough to be her father. When she invites Belle and her other friends to join her on a yacht in the Mediterranean for her birthday, they have no idea what theyre getting into.

The boyfriends business dealings are suspect and they quickly learn that Summer would do anything to please him. Where the story goes and how it gets there I will not spoil, but you will enjoy the ride. This one is chockfull of unlikable characters and twists, only one of which I saw coming. It was one of those books that kept me up past midnight because once the twists started coming, I just couldnt put it down.

This was such a great story and it’s very fast-paced. I finished it really quickly because I could not stop reading! All of the questions I was asking myself about the characters were answered at the end, so it was a satisfying ending too. I highly recommend!
