The Louvre: The Many Lives of the World’s Most Famous Museum audiobook free

Since I cannot travel to the Louvre right now due to COVID-19, this was a great way to learn about it before my next visit. The history of the buildings is well explained. The author obviously did immense research so the book is a bit of a slow read because of details. I kept turning to the inside covers to view a diagram that shows when different sections were built. Two suggestions would have made this book better. One, the text often referred to areas that are ruins or no longer exist, thus they are not on the front diagram so I could not quite figure out where they were. Second, the author mentions that readers should go online to see high quality versions of paintings or images he refers to, and I did that. But the black and white photos he does include needed tweaking to improve brightness and contrast. He chose good examples, we just can’t see them. I learned a lot from this book and recommend it to lovers of the Louvre and Paris.

This book is well written and full of information. But the ONLY map is a large site plan on the endpapers. And there aren’t nearly as many photographs as I expected. I had hoped there would be a little more detail about how everything was arranged.

Audiobook The Louvre: The Many Lives of the World’s Most Famous Museum by James Gardner

When ever I’ve been in Paris, I always look forward to my visit to the Louvre. It is truly the world’s most exciting and complete museum. Even though I’ve been there numerous time, I know I’ll never see all of it. I’ve always wondered about the history of the building itself. Once when I went to the gift shop while at the Louvre, I asked about a book about the building. At that time, nothing existed. While I haven’t finished reading “The Louvre: The Many Lives of the World’s Most Famous Museum”, I am thus far extremely impressed with the detail and outstanding writing. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the world’s most wonderful museum.

Audio The Louvre: The Many Lives of the World’s Most Famous Museum narrated by Graham Halstead

This is a very informative guide to the history and treasures of this wonderful museum.

But it’s difficult to fully appreciate all the information in the text without accompanying photos and floorplans, etc. Your appreciation of this work will be significantly enhanced with the use of an appropriate accompanying visual guide.

When telling about the various kings & other leaders of France over the 800 years, the pace moved well. When describing the various additions & changes to the building in great detail, the pace was very tedious. More maps, graphics, photos should have been provided throughout.
