Well, that was a disappointment. Spoilers below. (1) Are we not going to talk about the casual biphobia in this? (2) This relationship is super toxic and not something anyone should be cheering (3) The unnecessary drama is off the charts in this one (4) Too many side characters mean none of them get any depth or development (5) The homophobia of the boss is mentioned once, but never addresses?

This book checked boxes for me I didn\’t even know existed. Every bit of it was perfect… no pressure to the author. A person could easily say \”oh, another fake boyfriend, romantic comedy.\” But if this is you,and you are seeing this review and wavering, just trust me. The authors skill with banter, internal dialogue and pacing is unparalleled. No supporting character feels unnecessary or like filler. Every part of the execution is flawlessly done. I laughed, and I cried, and I am so sad its over. These characters may be some of my favorites. Alexis has a real talent for realistically screwed up, endearingly relatable characters that will make you fall in love with them, and they are so fleshed out, its impressive. So in love with this book and the authors writing.

Audiobook Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall
Reading all the glowing reviews I was wondering who would need my opinion, but here goes: Alexis Hall is a master storyteller. His delightful English humour, tender narrative and intelligent insights make for another stunningly beautiful book in Boyfriend Material. I laughed so hard, my husband was concerned and wondered what on earth I was doing. I so enjoyed this book that I would happily have awarded 10 stars if that were at all possible. I just went on to buy the audio, because really. I need this book in every electronic way possible. Alexis Hall writes totally believable, relatable characters and I loved loved loved Oliver and Luc to the point I wanted to hug them. Please don\’t miss this book. It\’s Brilliant.

Audio Boyfriend Material narrated by Joe Jameson
I was really surprised by this book. I have read Glitterland and Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall and I loved both of those books. This one not so much. Positives- Told from the POV of Lucien who is cute, funny, sarcastic and self deprecating. He has abandonment and trust issues but is a likable guy. His interactions with his group of zany friends are fun to read. Oliver helps him come alive. Negatives- There is too much over the top banter and Lucien\’s coworkers are beyond ridiculous. We barely get to know anything about stoic Oliver and how he is feeling. The romance was cute but lukewarm. Overall the balance was off, way too much of comedy that I didn\’t find particularly funny and not enough romance to draw me into caring what happened to these characters. Maybe if I was British I would have appreciated the humor more-idk.

This book made me endlessly happy. I joke I\’m just going to drop everything and start it all over again, but, like, I might. It\’s exactly what I needed. Luc and Oliver are both grumpy messes and I loved watching them together. Their friends are all terrible in the best ways. I wish we had gotten a bit more of Oliver\’s friends, but I just love both of these friend groups. They\’re the kind of friends that will tease you to the end of the world but will also stand up for you and push you in the right direction and come over and clean up your disastrous flat. Luc’s daily jokes with his coworker brought me ridiculous amounts of joy. There\’s just so many tidbits in this story that made me so happy. I love how they go into this fake relationship with eyes wide open, but they\’re still incredibly messy about it. They break up, they get back together, they pretend for longer than is normal, but they\’re just so freaking cute. I don\’t know that anything I say is going to be enough to tell you how much I loved this book, but I did. I finished it a little over an hour ago and the smile still hasn\’t left my face.
