Love comes in different forms — could be selfless, romantic, platonic, affectionate, and even self love, and sometimes love even changes everything. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate Dicamillo is a story of a porcelain china rabbit doll which was given to a girl named Abiline on her 7th birthday. The doll which was named “Edward” is loved and adored by everyone in the household. He was treated like a part of the family especially by Abiline, however he only loves himself.
The story is about Edward’s 30-year journey which started when he was accidentally thrown in the sea during the family’s vacation. As he wandered in different places, he met different people with different situations. From being caught in the fisherman’s net by a couple to being saved by a hobo and his dog.
He was even stolen by a boy as a gift for his sister, and later was sent to a doll mender. Over the years, Edward stayed on that shelf as he waited and met other dolls, until one day when he felt a familiar feeling of warmth and home. His previous owner, Abiline, happened to be shopping at the mender’s shop. She is now all grown up and has a daughter of her own.

The theme of “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” is all about love: to be loved, you need to have to have the ability to feel it; and to feel love you have to accept and allow it. As to Edward’s journey, he learned that real happiness comes from looking beyond his own reflection, listening to other people’s stories, and opening his heart to friendship.
