The death of her beloved husband left Cate Morris riddled with guilt. Even four years later, the sorrow is still evident in her eyes. Shes tried so hard to put on a brave face for the sake of her young son. But after losing her job, she cant stop their world from shifting.
The only place that they can turn to is the peculiar museum that has been in her late husbands family for generations. The Hatters Museum of the Wide Wide World is most known for its collection of mounted animals. Its not the kind of place that Cate ever imagined starting over. But sometimes, you find the greatest strength in the strangest of places.
And thats the most bitter thing about love: you cant understand it, measure itnot all its edges and intricaciesuntil its gone and the clear print of its negative self is left behind.
The Museum of Forgotten Memories is a lyrical proclamation of strength. Anstey Harris weaves a fragile thread of it through each of her characters. No matter how imperfect they seem on the outside, they remain remarkably resilient in their heart of hearts to the very end.
The story itself is painful one moment and then inspiring in the next. I found myself falling under its unusual spell while cheering out loud for both Cate and Leo. And I somehow know that the world would be a much better place with them in it. Wherever they might be

Having thoroughly enjoyed the author’s debut novel Goodbye Paris, I’ve been looking forward to this second novel! I will admit that the cover photo was a bit off-putting, but I forged ahead with the reading of this story that takes place in a small seaside town outside of London. Cate, a widow of 4 years, has lost her job due to redundancy, so she and her young adult son Leo make their way to Hatters, her late husband Richard’s family home-turned-museum with plenty of nooks and crannies and secrets!. As they settle in, they meet Araminta, who is the caretaker of the house-museum; a townie Malcolm, who brings groups to the museum; Curtis, who befriends Leo; Patch, an art teacher who befriends Cate; and others. This story of love and duty and darkness and courage and loyalty in their many guises doesn’t disappoint! Kudos to Anstey Harris!
