The Promise

I have followed Robyn Carr since the beginning, and she has never disappointed me yet. I’m not afraid to say that she is, and has been for many years now, #1 on my all time favorite author’s lists. She has a way of creating wonderful, and very believable characters we can all relate to. And this book is no exception. I don’t know about anyone else, but all of her stories and the characters tend to stick with me for several days after I’ve finished reading them.

I love this series which started out as a spin off from the beloved “Virgin River” series and Grace Valley. When I first heard she had this new series coming out; I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it. I was still so in love with the Virgin River and all of it’s wonderful characters, that I knew I’d have to eventually let go. And frankly, I was a little bit worried that this series wouldn’t measure up.

But I should have known better, because I was so totally wrong. This series is just as captivating as her Virgin River series, although I still can’t help but miss Jack and the whole gang back in Virgin River. I’ve read them all several times now, and it still feels like coming home every time I do.

This series is growing on me real fast though. I have loved each and every book, as well as all the characters that have been involved, so far. When this book was released, I couldn’t pick it up fast enough. Dr. Grant has had me intrigued for quite a while now, and I’m glad we finally got to read his story.

Not only did we get to see another side of Dr. Scott Grant, but I also fell in love with Peyton Lacoumette as well as her wonderful, wild, and wacky family, too. A lot of people could learn a whole lot about real love, devotion, and good family values, just by hanging around the family ranch. Paco and Corinne were so full of wisdom, and they taught their children that anything was possible with hard work. But it was their no nonsense attitudes and their playfulness that really made my heart melt.

That’s the thing I love most of all about Robyn Carr books. She has the ability to weave these wonderful characters, who come from all different walks of life, and blend them all together so seamlessly. And she always makes sure we get to catch up with some of our favorites from the past, too. But her stories aren’t all just a bunch of fluff. These character have lived hard lives and have had to deal with a lot of very emotional situations, and some very terrifying ones at times, too.

This book might not have dealt with scary situations like the ones we seen previously involving Devon and the cult situation, or the terrifying one with the death of Conner’s old friend, but it was still a very emotional and heart-warming story all the same. Scott and Peyton made me laugh, cry, and made me want to root for them in the end. I would have liked more at the end of this story to see what happens down the road, but Robyn will probably fill us in with the next book, just like she usually does.

I’m curious as to what she has in store for Rawley & Carrie. I know they say they are only friends right now, but they get along together better than most old married couples. I think it would be so much fun to watch these two, as they begin to develop deeper feeling for one another. And I have no doubt they will, eventually. Nothing would make me happier to see these two lost and lonely souls finally find happiness together.

The Promise audiobook Series Shifters Unbound

I’ve been waiting for ‘The Promise’ for several books now — or rather, for Scott’s story. I knew when he first moved to Thunder Point that it was only a matter of time before this dedicated doctor and wonderful father found the right woman, and I was excited to see who that might be. I thought, when I first started reading ‘The Hero’, that it might be Devon, the heroine of that novel, but she found her happily-ever-after with someone else. As it turns out, Scott had to wait for Peyton Lacoumette to arrive in town.

I love Peyton. She’s smart, she’s an excellent PA, and she’s really well-grounded. It’s almost unfair that she’s also gorgeous. I love her big, boisterous farm family, and her caring heart. The author doles out Peyton’s backstory in small doses, which allows Scott (and the reader) to get to know her slowly, the way one does in real life. She and Scott are attracted to each other, but Peyton is dealing with both pain and self-doubt after her last relationship fell apart, and in some ways the situation with Scott, his job, and his children holds uncomfortable similarities to that relationship — uncomfortable for Peyton, who is determined not to make the same mistakes again.

Audiobook The Promise by Cris Dukehart

I’ve read lots of Robyn Carr books this year. I love that they reflect everyday life in America and that she introduces you to different people and families each time. You build a sense of belonging. Maybe they aren’t great literary works but they are escapist without being too starry. However, I did feel that this particular book lacked something, not sure what but it seemed a little flat.
