I just finished MATT HELM #17: THE RETALIATORS, a great installment in the series. This novel followed a string of tepid, over-long, and convoluted Helm installments apparently designed to showcase Donald Hamilton’s nautical knowledge. I’m thankful that the series found its legs again in THE RETALIATORS.
In this novel, MATT HELM and two assassin colleagues are on-the-run and suspected of treason after internal investigators discover large cash deposits into their bank accounts. The action quickly turns to Mexico where the seeds of the plot against Helm and his co-workers were planted. Many double-crosses and compelling characters surface. Blood flows. Matt gets laid.
This book was nominated for an Edgar award for Best Paperback Original. For my part, I’m glad he series is back on track. I look forward to the next one…

The Retaliators audiobook in series Matt Helm
Titan Books is reprinting Donald Hamilton’s Matt Helm series–all 27 novels. My copies are old and falling apart. I welcome the opportunity to get fresh copies and retire my old ones–even if on Page 42 this typo appears: “I could hear the doodlebug coining.” I think that was “coming.” Shows that the material wasn’t just photocopied!
Told in the first person, reading Matt Helm brings the reader on the journey with Agent Eric. Page 57 explains this book (#17) title: Agent Roger was a “natural-born retaliator.” A complex web of characters with their own agenda interact, providing plenty of drama: a free-lance assassin, a Chinese agent, a Mexican official, a department store mogul and his wife (who is Roger’s sister), an ambitious agency director named Andrew Euler who is much like the late J. Edgar Hoover, ex-pat Americans living in Baja, a British mercenary and a sinister conspiracy to carve out a private playground. Then there’s Mac, Agent Eric’s boss. One hundred thousand mid-Seventies dollars is involved to put Mac’s people out of action. Donald Hamilton used current events (about 1975) to make his novel feel real, feel current. The Vietnam Syndrome, “The Ugly American,” internal problems in Mexico (going on two centuries now!) a failed coup in the Bahamas, the rise of la Raza in the USA, a mention of Watergate, and bureaucratic pruning of the clandestine services in the wake of the unmentioned Church Commission findings all provide a firm foundation for “The Retaliators.”
Hamilton uses Helm as a bully pulpit, too. Play the violence game and be ready for more violence. On Page 187 Colonel Huntington preaches to the choir: “Helm, we’ve created a world that’s a perfect environment for toughs and outlaws. They feel they can do anything they please, absolutely anything, because the peaceful citizen has been disarmed and taught never to resist, no matter what happens.”
Some things never change.
Donald Hamilton showcases his gun knowledge with a description of the Automat Kalashnikov and how firing a handgun with just one hand told Helm which side his attackers were on.
I had fun reading “The Retaliators” again and I look forward to the re-release of “The Terrorizers” in October.

Audiobook The Retaliators by Donald Hamilton
I first read these almost as they were published in the 60’s, 70’s and 80′, and was hooked from the first page of the first volume. Matt Helm was contemporary of James Bond, and they are agents of their respectiv governments, but there the resemblance ends. The Helm novels are much more grounded, more believable, than the Bonds, that trying compare them is an insult to Donald Hamilton. Helm is practical and pragmatic, and the first-person narrative lets the reader know what he’ thinking, why he is acting as he does in a given situation. He never takes himself too seriously, and is his own worst critic when he screws up, which is another of the many things I like about the character, and the author.

Audio The Retaliators narrated by Stefan Rudnicki
Far from the start of what you would expect in a foreign agent’s adventure, Matt Helm goes to his local bank to withdraw funds to buy a new truck and discovers an extra twenty thousand dollars in his account. He soon discovers his government bank account also has an extra twenty thousand. He is one of three secret agents who have sudden big deposits and have been declared traitors by the federal government as having received an illegal payoff. A coded phone call to his boss tells him “Mac” doesn’t believe the evidence, but security forces are already moving against him and one of the other agents, “Roger” has already been located and was killed in an escape attempt. His only hope is to find the one who deposited the funds to clear himself. The chase takes him into Mexico where a revolution to overthrow the government is in the planning stage and Matt Helm is in the middle of opposing forces.

I have some of the Matt Helm series of books, but didn’t have all of them “The Retaliators” was one I didn’t have. Online, the prices of these books have greatly increased! So, I paid the $1.99 for the Kindle book. This is a great way to get the books. I’ll be purchasing about 5 or 6 more in the near future. I have a HD Fire 10 tablet which has the Kindle app.; so it’s perfect for reading books online!
I was introduced to Matt Helm by my father over 45 years ago. When I read these books, I hear my father’s voice again 20 years after he has died, and I am grateful to be with him again! The books speak of a brave , tough, determined man doing a job that requires courage, dedication, self sacrifice where the only reward or thanks offered is the chance to once again put himself in harms way to support a way of life that he truly believes in, traits I believe my father had, and which I would like to believe I can aspire to . I will to my last breath be grateful for the chance to remember my father through these books!
