The Shadow Agent

I would say these books are above average for this genre (thriller/special ops/spy). I think my favorite was the second in the series, but all 3 were fine. Our hero, Tom, is a smart guy and not easily misled. And he seems to be a nice guy trying to do the right thing. Some lead characters in this genre are’t. My only criticism is the author gets a little wordy with some descriptions. Especially on guns. Either he’s a gun enthusiast or he has a gun encyclopedia. On one gun he took a page and a half to describe it. Everything from what calibers it could be chambered with, to the weight and how a counterbalance weight could be added to offset the recoil and kick, the history of the gun and (in for example) a 10.5″ barrel lengthened to 14″ with the silencer. And Tom ended up getting a lot of guns! I really didn’t care, so I would skim some of these. But overall a good series with a satisfying ending. Actually, I wouldn’t mind seeing Tom and Stella back for a couple of more adventures. I recommend for those of you who enjoy this type of story.

I’m always curious to see the 2nd and 3rd book in an action/thriller series since the benefit of the origin story framework is gone. Frankly it was 50/50 I would read the second book since I found the first slightly slow with less than charismatic characters to follow. Tom really doesn’t have many quirks and at times almost comes off as too methodical to be interesting beyond his initial challenges. But, book 2 had a much better pace and the transformation of Stella into a competent fighter was intriguing.

This book, #3 in the series was extremely satisfying. The author’s attention to extreme detail during engagements isn’t over used, and his ability to layer backstory subplots from previous books truly paid off.

I was aghast however that we didn’t get to experience the reuniting of Tom and Stella at the end and it was totally glossed over. WHAT WAS HE THINKING!? He may not realize it but the romance component (Mr. and Mrs Smith meets Jack Reacher) necessitates some detail of these interactions no less than you would describing the final melee between the protagonist and the villain.

Most importantly, these characters are becoming interesting as they learn to become a partnership in every sense of the word. Well done.

Overall, very much enjoyed the book & the series…. my only real complaint is at some point the author needs to realize the reader isn’t stupid? At least not as dumb as the characters at times.
Meaning if you talk vests all the way thru the book, then a character meets up with a bad guy – with one chance to take them out–the assumption SHOULD BE he’s wearing a vest, so a chest shot is dumb. It would be better to have the shooter miss all together? THAN to forget the bad guy is most likely smart enough to show up with a vest too? Just my two cents.

Fast moving action and thrills. A great story with its own twists. A great way to finish a fantastic trilogy. It’s sad to see it end, maybe it’s not the end. For now I will re-read the series and then get to work on long neglected projects around my house. This was truly a great book and fantastic series.

This storyline follows with the same principal characters as in his two previous books. It is as were the others a fast paced and action packed black ops storyline with numerous twists and turns. The principals in this one are each finding their respective ways with each other as the mission unfolds. There is a surprise ending.
