The Sweeney Sisters

I bought this book for my sister/daughter book group. It sounded like a perfect sister book for our discussions. I have to say that although I have been in many book groups, the group I have formed with my sisters, daughter and niece has been one of the best actual discussion groups I have ever experienced. This book however was a big disappointment. The characters come off as entitled and frankly vapid. They are concerned with preserving their father’s legacy mainly because it will benefit them monetarily. At the end I really could not determine what the message of the book was. None of the sisters are particularly likable and the attempts to make them seem vulnerable or elicit empathy for them just made me disgusted with them. Even the new half-sister is not well developed as a character, although I disliked her the least. It all ends hunky dory since in this entitled world even a short order cook has a trust fund. What added insult to injury was that I purchased this at the full price of $14.99 because I couldn’t get it at the library. When I went back on line to look at the reviews (thinking we should have been warned), I found sterling reviews and a price drop to $3.99. UGH!!! I can’t believe the initial price of this book or the great reviews that it has received. For those of you who said you wished you had sisters after reading this, believe me real sisters are much, much better that this group.

I’ve just met and fallen in love with some of the most delightful sisters! The Sweeney Sisters follows Liza, Maggie and Tricia, three adult sisters whose lives are messy, joyful, hilarious and relatable. I don’t want to divulge any spoilers, but there are surprises in store for the lucky readers who grab this book. Once you’re finished, you’ll want more. I actually put the book down and walked away for a few hours because I didn’t want it to end.

This is Lian Dolan’s third novel and they just keep getting better. The sisters, daughters of a literary lion, whose death, puts the plot in motion, are sympathetic yet flawed in the most human ways-also kind in a way I think we all seek to be. The setting of Southport, Connecticut may have drawn me in more than others in that, not quite my world growing up, pretty darn close. This was the perfect read for me right now where I could escape to another place and, although contemporary, time.

Unexpectedly coming across the Satellite Sisters Podcast, I began listening and couldn’t wait to read this book!! It met all my expectations and more! The dynamics between the sisters are so well written! As the story unfolds, I was unable to put the book down!

They shared their father with the literary world. He wrote books that resonated with many. His personality was so big that others merely lived in his shadow. Then, suddenly, he passed away. How are three sisters supposed to cope with such a huge loss? Add to their grief, that they are not just three sisters. They discover a fourth among their midst upon his death. Talk about shocking. This is Lian Dolans novel THE SWEENEY SISTERS.

William Sweeney was the center of the family. That is, after his wife passed away. When she was alive, while her success paled in comparison to his, in her daughters eyes, she was the true artist.

The three daughters, grown now, unique as can be, very different from each other, but not as close as they once were. They come back together to the small town in Connecticut where they grew up to bid their father a proper farewell. Thats when a fourth Sweeney sister makes herself known.

How did they not know about her? Did her father know? What about their mother? What will happen now? Will she want a piece of the literary legends pie that is supposed to be divided into thirds?

The Sweeney sisters share red hair, a love of family, endless fond memories of their childhood. Now, another sister! What can they believe now that their dad is no longer here to answer their many questions? So much is contingent upon Bills memoir that he left behind.

Good drama, high-flying emotions, and self-discovery.
