Brit Bennett writes about racism and the generation gap in the same novel with quite an expertise. Two black sisters living in the Southern Black community were tired of their living standards. Thus the two decided to run away from all the restrictions and boundaries which surround them all the time. The plan was made and the day was selected for this final venture after which their life would turn up differently. Both at the age of sixteen ran from their house but only one succeeded in crossing the barrier of their society, the other one remained in the same pit of misery. Life was never the same for the twin sisters after that.

The sister who was left behind remained in the same situation and got married to a black boy a few years later. The one who eloped from the Black village got the chance to get settled in the big city and married a white man there. Now after decades, a new generation has emerged as the children of these two sisters have come of age. These two sisters now look worried about the future of their children who belong to different races. Brit Bennett mixes the story of The Mothers here to some extent in the later stages of the novel.
Initially, the start was different but in the middle we see the two sisters becoming mothers and then thinking about the next generation more rather than their fate. They chose their fate once which ended up differently for them, now they hope that their children choose wisely for themselves. Otherwise, life would become tough for them shortly.
